Which Insurance Co's for modded cars?

Following comments made on the 'Performance Chip' thread I though i'd ask this quesion seperately as i'm sure everyone has their own experiances.

With my current mild level of mod's I still find mainstream insurance companies cheaper than specialist ones. For example i've been with Direct Line for 2 years now and despite charging a 10% premium per mod they still come out cheaper than anyone else i've tried and have sensible levels of excess. With the mods that i've got planned in the not too distant future i'm sure that all the 10% premiums will soon add up and the cost of the policy will skyrocket, therefore which companies do other modders use and how on earth do you go about descirbing some of the 944 specialist mods? Would an insurance company know what a Promax Level 2 kit was? or a MAF? If they don't understand the mod or it's effects how on earth do they go about calculating a premium??

I was thinking today about people who build kit cars. How do they insure their cars as every one must be different with different mixes and matches of engine/gearbox/suspension/brakes - wouldn't one of these companies be more suited to modified 944's?

Adrian Flux. They can pretty much get anything insured. It took them 3 days to come back with my quote.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]They will not know what a ProMax level 2 kit is (I don't even know that off the top of my head and I live 944s), but if you tell them what constutes the kit they will understand. They are the people who do kit cars also.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Yeah, I'm with Priv and all they seem to have is a tick list of items that any given car could have modded (Turbo, ECU, Exhaust, etc..) and then ask what the power hike is compared to standard. They have bandings for the bhp increase - upto 25%, 25-50%, etc..

I'm using HIC - they want a premium according to the extra bhp - and their cover also includes track days (about the only firm I've found who still does)

Liverpool & Victoria used to be a s good as gold, but I think they are being a little more selective now. May still be worth a try.

Liverpool & Victoria used to be a s good as gold,

No, they didn't want to know me at the Turbos renewal back in October, and I'd been with them for three years. I've got a monthly policy while my cars at the seaside just now. As soon as she comes back I think I'll be going down the Adrian Flux route

Bummer! Looks like Beaky will be looking for a new insurer next time around then []. He hasn't been doing the mileage that he used to, and now has a garage to live in (well will have when we get it finished) so I might stand some chance of somebody taking him on.

Well they were ok with me apart from a near doubling of the premium, but this was still cheaper than most,

Tony

Oh and I dont know about trackdays anymore as I haven't asked as I haven't done one :(

Perhaps I should have been clearer. They did quote me but it was just under double at £700 so I said stuff it and got a monthly pay policy from First Alternative to cover the car while it sits outside Jons workshop.

When it's finished I imagine you'll be in the same boat as me where only Flux and one other (I'd have to check who) will even quote, Paul.

It was the Insurers who killed off the Escort RS Cosworth, are they going to do the same for modified 944's ?

I think the words "Porsche", "extensively" and "modified" in series scare the poo out of most insurers. I don't know why that should be as there haven't been any claimed on that I know of, but maybe there are too few around for the insurers to be able to see that trend.

Thats what i'm currently paying for my policy which is a std fully comp, 1st car 12kmiles a year main car type policy. I'd be chuffed if I could be paying that post my mods. Hopefully I should be under that on the basis i'm getting a 2nd sensible car (due to the nipper bien on the way) so I can insure my 944 for an 8k mile a year 2nd car policy. I did have a £9k buget for a 2nd car but am currently considering a £4k Focus Estate and a proportion of the remainder for mods!!

I think I paid £640 for this year - 5k miles limit, but otherwise I can do what I want with it as regards driving to work etc.

And mine was £510 with 10k annual mileage. Admittedly only circa 285bhp at the mo as opposed to the 400bhp boys, but I also have the missus as a named driver []

A. Manning recently gave a talk at the Surrey Region, they said they would insure modded cars. Just be honest as to the mods.
