which is the best 993 base car? - can't afford an RS!

I want to get back in to a 993 - a lovely one... as an ongoing project, and one I can track occasionally.

I can't afford an RS
I don't want a turbo - too heavy, don't like forced induction on the flat-6.

so it's really between a carrera 2 and a carrera 2S or perhaps even a 4S

I want to improve the performance of the car over time - upgrade suspension, brakes, engine etc and my question is which of these cars would be the best as a base?

I love the looks of the S's but does the extra weight balance out the 'supposed' chassis enhancements?

if I can take a 2S and sort out it's suspension, fit some big reds and perhaps later add a supercharger would this give me a car that will lap faster than if I did the same to a standard carrera?

Thanks

Kenny

Excluding the RSs, the purest derivative of each of the 911 variants tends to be the C2 Coupe (manual) - and the lighter the better. A non-sunroof, simply spec'd, example will save valuable kgs in crucial areas.

I would consider weight saving before power increases because it benefits all of the car's dynamics, as Colin Chapman would testify. Acceleration, braking, handling, etc all prosper from carrying less mass.

I don't want to appear rude, but if you "don't like forced induction on the flat-six", you won't want to supercharge it will you?

ha ha yes well spotted - I realised that over lunch! the supercharger reference was really for the guys at nine-meister, I've also posted there.

perhaps I should have put 'I'd prefer to tune the engine without forced induction if I possibly can....'

Oliver - I've had a C2 before and it was great, is there any 2 or 4S drivers out there that can testify quicker lap times or regard it as a good base?

Nope.

I would agree with this caller..... sunroof less C2 (although with air con) is a the one to go for.....that was the basic spec that I was looking for when I was 993 hunting !

forget the wide boy S, ..... after all an RS is a narrow body

then a slim fast diet is needed [:D] or a few bottles or Nitrious ! [8D]

absolutely that's the problem eh - the S's look sooooo good.

looks like the narrow body is the one then - I think as sundeep says the RS is based on this which must mean something.

the gmund car looks great - just wish it was standard body..

All right, the Ss look good, but the C2 is a much better all round proposition (and when you compare them, the C2 still has a lovely rump). As somebody earlier said, apart from the bigger rear end, all you really get is different coloured calipers and lowering, which you do easily on a C2 anyway...[:D] and they're usually a damn sight more expensive to buy!
