Which is the best IRS repacement

Apologies if I have not found the answer to this in an existing thread. I have a 996 2 2004 tip with only 31k on the clock. I purchased about 6 months ago and have decided post warranty that I will be keeping it for a while. I have read the multitude of articles regarding IMS replacement and have decided as a precaution i will have it replaced as there is no record of this having been done before. Living in the east Midlands I have had a number of quotes ranging from 1000 plus VAT to 1500 plus VAT. Whilst cost is still a factor I want to ensure I get the best repalcement (single/dual bearing ceramic etc) does anyone have advice on the best way to go.I don't mind travelling to ensure best value/repacement.

Andy!

I've never had one fitted myself - I took my chances. LN say the ceramic bearing should be treated as a maintenance item, and should be changed after x miles / x years, so that would put me right off. Changing like-for-like also seems pointless to me, although some retrofitters remove the outer oil seal, which makes more sense. There is no real (or accurate) data around, and I feel that a lot of people have them changed unnecessarily. I do understand people's concerns though, and at the end of the day it is all about peace of mind.

There are so many alternatives available, all claiming to be a permanent cure, and I really wouldn't know which was the best. Whatever you decide, take it to someone who has fitted LOTS of them, and has the experience. There are horror stories of when the bearing hasn't been properly fitted, causing a failure which probably wouldn't have happened if it had been left well alone.

One of the few people I would trust is Revolution Porsche in Brighouse. I would have a word with the owner, Russ Stanley, and see which is the best in his opinion. I know he has fitted different types, including one of the first direct oil feed LN bearings, and I also know his prices are about the best around for this job. It might be a fair distance from you, but even if you don't use him, I would get his advice.

Maybe not the answer you were hoping for, but I hope this helps.
