Which Oil filter

Would anyone happen to know which Oil filter I require for an '86 oval dash lux. A Halfords one will suffice but the catalogue thing doesnt list the 944. Any ideas?

Ive had the oil since Xmas but just need to get the right filter.

Cheers.

For normal road use a boggo standard filter will suffice. I think I have a mahle one fitted to mine. Just go into any local motor factors and they will be able to give you a selection of brands for your car ranging in manufacturer, price and of course quality. Something middle of the road should do.

OPC or OEM for me. Mahle is the OEM supplier and they can be bought from ECP. Dealer-supplied filters are usually competitive on price, and frequently cheaper than motor factors!

I have a very reasonable motor factors who are a lot closer than Cambridge. They are very good with general items such as service kits. Obviously I have to look further afield for the more specialist stuff, Hopefully not having to settle for porscheshop prices.

I normally always ring Max at Frazer Part first. He is a diamond. If he can't offer it to you cheaper than OPC (and he is well connected with OPC) then he will always tell you and advise you to use them. He will even tell you what the OPC price is. You could say he is mad for doing so but in his words it's what makes me go back to him time and time again. [:)]

I believe I'm right in saying you must have a filter with a non return valve built in. Some cheap ones don't and the oil will drain down from the head making it clatter when it starts which cant do any good. At least thats what I was told after I had my car serviced by a local garage and it suddenly started clatering when started in the morning. Since then I've always used genuine filters. Not worth messing with for £5 extra

I believe the non-return valve is built into the top end. I have never known of a filter with a non-return valve in it. There may be one in the filter housing to ensure it doesn't empty I am not sure though.

It is Rob. And many filters exist without the one way valve (Champion, Halfords, and some Motaquip lines to list two or 3 that don't). A few Renault Clito valver boys use these filters on tired engines for this very reasons (apparently the oil pressure goes up a touch).

My new engine has only seeemed to be on OPC or Mahle Knecht filters (EMC fitted a Mahle, I got a Porsche one from my local specialist). I know that Mann filters can be a safe bet, but to be frank the price difference between that and an OPC/Mahle item is so little (although the Mann item is also black...).

I've got a spreadsheet somewhere showing the price differences. For me, PCT in Coventry were the cheapest by quite a bit with GSF coming second closest (bar them being Mann products and them not stocking the S2 air filter). If you are wondering why I did this, I have very little money at the time and plenty of time. But I guess my loss is your gain (or something along those lines).

EDIT : Not quite come out as expected.

Are the k and n ones any good? Seem reasonably priced on eBay and the nut welded on the top would make for easy installation/removal.

I suspect that there is a cross-over with VW filters for cars of the same age. I have been told (but can't remember the details) that there is a VW model that shares the same filter as those on the Lux-es, and suspect there is a similar correlation between the S2 and something in the VW range.

Oli.

From memory the oil filters are the same for a 924S 944 2.5l or 944S2 as I have had each and the filters have always been the same. I get mine from Promax delivered next day usually for around £7.98.

Did someone mention Clio Valver, lol, weirdly enough, I have one as a daily driver as well as my 944 turbo, and have been involved in the cliosport forum over the years and in the discussions about the non return valve on oil filters. I agree they make sense and defo make difference on them, whether engine is tired or not, generally you dont see any more pressure on the guage, its just that it climbs quicker on a cold startup and indeed a warm one so it seems good idea. So when I first changed my filter on 944 i looked for it, although as somebody mentioned they dont always have it. for those interested if you look straight down bore of centre of filter you can usually see it at roof of filter. Whats everybodies thought on them on here, My 944 has excellent pressure, Max until warm, then 3-4 at hot idle, rising straight to 5 once above 1k revs.
