Which oil to top up

Been looking through the service history and it doesnt say what oil has been used in the oil changes. So what oil will be safe to use to top up the oil level ?

Hi,

I have always used Mobil 1, full synthetic oil. I think a large proportion of 3.2 owners do also.
I understand that these old engines can run on non synthetics as well.
You could ring the dealer who serviced the car last, as they should have a record of what was used

I think I would avoid guessing. It's said that the synthetics will mix with anything but I can't convince myself that it wouldn't be better to use what's in there already.

If you don't know what's in there I'd be inclined to have the oil changed anyway - and then you will know. If it was done recently enough to not justify a change, ask them who changed it.

In my experience, most of the independents who work on these older cars (I'm including my 964 in that catagory) generally recommend the non-synthetics - like Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 - since the synthetic oils were certainly not commonplace when such engines were designed in the '60s. The most popular Mobil 1 (0W/30) is generally too thin for the older engines and will often promote leaks.

Shell Helix non synthetic, possibly 10-40 for my 3.2

I run Mobil1 in my 930 only, it is not good for the actual engine.

Shell Helix 10W40 is what I use, as others have said though dont mix the oils and if in doubt change the lot! (even though they take literes and litres of oil, its cheaper to change the lot... rather than causing engine wear!!).
Most people I have spoken to say the older cars are not so good with full synth oil.

I have used Mobil 1 before in a 3.2,and found it too thin(it caused some oil leaks).I have allways found Magnetec 10w40 a good oil to use,and i intend to use it in the 84 3.2 i have just purchased(i dont know what oil is in the car,so will do an oil change).

i use 10.40 magnatec in my 911 also somethin to consider is the mileage on the car as to weather it may need somethin slightly heavier, personnaly i would avoid anything under a 10.40

If you just need to top up and you dont know what is in there then 10w-40 semi will be fine, all oils do mix without issue.

At next oil change make a note of what is used, then you can top up with the same stuff/quality.

Cheers

Guy.
