Which Oil

You don't need a full synthetic for the S2 so a good quality semi synthetic of 10w40 weight will be fine

I'd go a step further and say use a PAO Ester oil. I'm a big advocate of the clingy polarised oils to provide optimal cold start protection.

I need to put some oil in in between taking the car for servcie. 1991 s2. which brand / type should I use?

Thanks

I was using Castrol GTX Magnatec 15/40W up until recently, but after reading others advice on the forum (specialists in particular), have now started using Mobil 1 Motorsport 15/40W. Expensive though and the fully synthetic oil does appear to make the tappet noise slightly louder than the Castrol did. Mobil 1 is supposed to keep the engine cleaner, apparently Castrol can cause varnishing and deposits in the engine although I'm not the right man to ask about that.

Cheers

If you're talking top-up, I would always recommend you put in the same as what's already in.

Oops just noticed that was the question [:D], thought you meant what oil do we recommend for the service [8|].

That seems to be quite a controvertial topic. I personally have used it on previous cars (though not at every oil change - only onece as it's meant to last 100,000 miles) with no problems whatsoever and used it on the first service I gave my car, but several people on this forum have absolutly slated the stuff and some are talking first or second hand so I don't think i'll be using it again.

But in terms of oil I use Silkolene Pro 5w40 and it is fine for me. I tend to think why not use fully synthetic. Yes an S2 or lux might not necessarily need it but in my view it will be more resistant to petrol diluting it and to the mayonaise effect. I don't know for sure, but that is my own personal theory.

Hey Scott do you think it would be woth doing a new thread "SLICK 50 YES OR NO" as a new thread

Hi, and welcome. I've moved this to the 944 forum area as there are many more people there able to help. Or give you conflicting answers and then argue about it, before going off-topic completely! [:D]

I used to use 10:40 synthetic in my lux, but it had semi in it a few times as some garages thought it was as good, if not better. That discussion never reached a conclusion, so I'd be happy with either and change it regularly.

In my old 944 (guards red '86) I used 20w-50 and changed it often, no problems. In the gold one I use(d) 10w-40 and it didn't seem to do it much good it started leaking much more, detergent properties? So in my new '83 944 I think I'm going back to 20w-50.
