Which one?

Hi Guys,
Firstly, congrats on a great forum.
After a few years in the oil burner wilderness I can now go and get my first Porsche. The 996 (facelift) ticks all the boxes for me, but need some advice.
Is the 4 wheel drive car any more thirsty on juice than the 2? And is PSM crucial?
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Barleymagrew!
I think the 4wd is slightly more thirsty but you get the extra grip for that. I'm sure that most drivers will suggest PSM if you are new to a Porsche - just to be on the safe side!!! but you can always turn it off for playing :) I have a 2wd cabriolet that is up for sale at the moment - should you be interested in a soft top!!!

I turn the PSM off as soon as I get into the car now. Only used it in the first couple of weeks (because I had it and didn't know the car at all). If you are someone who enjoys driving and you've driven RWD cars before then the 996 is really not that scary. There are far worse. If you've never had a RWD and a Porsche is more about having something pleasurable to be in than wanting to enjoy the thrill of driving then PSM is a very good thing might just save you while you're on the sharp end of the learning curve.

Regards,

Ben

Thanks for your help guys. If I'm honest, the 2 wheel drive is probably preferable in coupe - although I really like the targa.
Has anyone got any experience of manual vs tip. I do quite a few miles to would really like to know how they are day to day.

Martin!

The Tip vs. manual debate will rage forever, and you will get a fairly even share of pro and anti opinions. I love mine, and it suits my use perfectly - easy for the daily commute, but fun when I hit the open road. I would say that you have to try both and make your own decision.

As for PSM, I wouldn't like to be without it. It won't stop you shunting it if you drive like a loony, but it will help you out if you encounter the unexpected. You can always turn it off when you want to be totally in control.

Never had PSM, so never needed it and never had any problems.

More to go wrong in my opinion. I like to keep things simple ! The purer the spec the better for me. :)

I have the Tip S and the avg mpg after 1 years motoring (about 10K miles this year) is showing just over 27 mpg. I dont exactly hang around when driving it either!
