Having recently delved into 944 ownership i have the D90 wheels on my S2, i feel like i want something else but do not want to be laughed at by every owner out there,

I like porsche GT3 wheels or maybe the good old cup 3 wheels, any suggestions, anyone got some pictures of different wheels on 944's and if you have the names of the wheels too please, even better anyone who has a set up for grabs let me know

hi mate i would'nt put 18" alloys on..i tryed that on my s2..the car was tram lining all over the place..so in the end i put 17" alloys on and its great now..

There's a million pics of our cars with different wheels on them. Search through the archives in here and there will also be plenty on Rennlist.

Ever since they came out I`ve loved Cup 1`s

17" on mine but there are 16" which others consider look pants on a 944.

Well Carl, I'd guess that your alignment was awry, as with 968 castor mounts and optimised suspension geometry, mine is absolutely fine - important to use wheels with correct offset too[;)]

Ride's not the best, mind...![:D]

Wot he sed.

Cup 1's are the only wheel that would tempt me away from the D90's on my S2. Snag is that in 17inch size, they are very expensive and I can never justify the cost.

Looking at photos like that one make me think long and hard about it though ...

Cup 1 do look nice and I like Nick's wheels too. Not many others suit imo, especially Boxster wheels. I like the D90s if refurbed nicely as they're very period.

Mine are replica`s [;)]

They are HEAVY compared to D90`s though [&:]

Those are split rims from a 993 Targa. Rim is too "thick" for the 944 IMHO.

I'm another lover of Cup1's ~ particularly when refurbed with the centres in graphite and a polished rim. Hubba hubba.

As you can tell the look you're after is down to personal preference really. Cup 1's look great but I also think that the twisted 5 spoke designs work well on 944's. Really updates the look of the car. I've got the 17" Boxster/996 carrera wheels on mine and they look good, but i'd ideally like the 996 turbo/996 C4S hollow spoke wheels. They look the best of any wheel in my opinion and are quite light for an 18" wheel, however they seem to be quite expensive and there is a significant ramp up of tyre cost when going from 17" to 18" (pretty much £100 per corner for premium branded tyres).

I had the D90 wheels when I first bought my 944 and then went for the cup 1 wheels which I think are fab![;)]

I was going to change my 18's for 16's in the interests of better handling but I'm used to the 18's now and the D90's look so diddy in comparison.

Cup 1's are uber sexy ! not just saying that because i have them on mine, wouldn't say no to some nice speedline splits with polished rims [:)]

Those images really look good, its amazing how a 944 can wear 17's and 18's so well. Dont think any other mid-80's design coupe (if 1982 is mid?) could do it.

The Cup 1 / 2 and the multi spoke 18's are my favourites too.

I have seen 19's off a 997, the 5 spoke pattern which look nice? but are surely OTT.

In the interest of handling and low running costs I have stayed with 16's. The 88-on Forged are, light weight, easy to clean, corrosion resistant, handle well and are economical to shod.

For the early offset, 16 inch Fuchs and Turbo Teledials are nice too IMO.

A bit off thread but the splitter on the Red car looks class, and a few mm lower ride helps the asthetics too.

I think that hits the nail on the head more then anything else, the cars look better on practically any wheel when they are lowered. Also a lot cheaper then a set of 18"s.

Here's a good site that catalogues all the Porsche wheels and details about them:-

If I ever get round to getting the 18" 996 turbo rims i'll be keeping them for road and retaining my 17" rims, shodding them with Toyo R888's and reserve them for trackdays.

Only the Turbo wheels have the hollow centres Scott. The C4S wheels look similar but theyre heavier and have solid spokes...

Given how far the pound has fallen and the mad cost of original prestine/restored wheels, a new set of MM cups and tyres for about a grand is not that bad a price really. For me I can't be bothered with flash wheels, both my S2 and 968 have 16" cups, they look good, have plenty of room for cooling and are slightly lighter then D90's,,, and of course the car rides better on 16" rims, big wheels rob these cars of the very thing they have as an advantage over modern cars IMHO.

As said long ago in a previous thread of all the standard spec front engined 44/68 cars IMHO the early turbo has the nicest balance of ride and handling, really nice ride quality on stock suspension yet feels much more alive and lighter on its feet then latter cars. Some of this must be down to the weight of the wheels and hubs, on Fuchs it will be the ultimate.

Oh did I mention Fuchs [:D], debate over IMHO really, looking at that early turbo running on black Fuchs in the pictures thread it just looks perfect.
