Which speakers for best sound?

Hi, I am trying to get some help on which are the best speakers to put in my 3.2 coupe, I have a new Pioneer head unit, but think an amp and new speakers are required. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Scott~Llandudno.

I've had Alpine ones fitted front & rear. No modifications required and way better than then OEM items. I have an Alpine DAB head unit so that clearly makes a huge difference to the sound.

Thanks for the info, I am in a quandry which system and maker to use. But hopefully all will become clear over the next few days. Thanks Scott

No problem. Just be careful if you change your head unit. Some of the current models( mine included) run really hot as they have a decent amp built in. Just take care with the wiring. My wife complained about the heater being on all the time - turned out to be the amp!

Hi Scott, I've just fitted some Infinity RS Series speakers to the front and some Pioneers in the back. The Infinitys are very good but the Pioneers I think are lacking in Bass although I may just be expecting too much from 5x3 ellipticals. Still a vast improvement to the original fitment that arn't really up to the power put out by the amps (I have the optional separate front and rear amps)

Cheers,
Martin.

Hi. Just fitted Alpines in mine front and rear - fit behind the original grilles, so it looks standard, but sounds GREAT compared to the original German basic speakers without tweeters. 1325s & 4625s - 2 of each

I only have a Sony head, and it sounded so crap I was going to replace it after doing the speakers. Lucky I did not buy the replacement, the speakers made it sound HUGELY better - pretty good in fact.

I have got Infinitys in mine front and back plus a Kenwood amp under the passengers seat. I junked the balance wheel in the middle of the console and rewired the speakers with decent cable and now control fade from the head unit.
Next job is to replace the cross overs in the doors as these are original. It is endless what you can spend when you get into stereos cheaper to open the window and listen to the engine.

Its almost impossible to recommend speakers as everyones expectations, perception of sound and budgets are different[8|] I've got Kenwood 6.5" three-way's in the front door, pair of Alpine tweeters discretely attached to each corner of the dash and a pair of Kenwood 6.5" two way's in the rear shelf. These are all driven by a Kenwood unit pushing out 50watts x4 and it's O.K. [:)] But what has made a BIG difference is a Bazooka 6" active bass tube[:D] These tubes were specifically designed for 911's (would you believe) and sit neatly across the floor behind the passenger seat. It doesn't give you the rumbling and depth of say a 10" or a 12" sub but ain't 'alf bad for what it is[;)] Very respectfull and impressive.
However, my system does have to compete with the sports exhaust! So what I do when it ain't peeing down.....stereo off.......window down......find a good A road, drop a gear or two and red line here we go.:ROFLMAO:
Sad isn't it.
Score so far= Stereo,12 Exhaust note,42.
Cheers
Alex

I have to agree. Given a choice of my H & S or the Alpine......... I'll take the former every time!:ROFLMAO:

Now how did you know I've got a Hayward & Scott as well..........lovely ain't they.........worth every penny[:D]
Needless my missus knows when I'm coming home, probably about two miles away[:)]
Keep revving those pots.
Cheers

Very true.

The stock speakers aren't really up to much, but I guess were relatively good in the 80's.
I have recently upgraded to 5 3/4 audiobahn components at the front with some infinity 6 x 9's at the rear which have been amped up to give a better bass sound.
This set up works very well, but of course the engine note wins every time

Hmmmmm 6 X 9's how easy are they to fit? Is it just a case of cutting the parcel shelf holes bigger?
I'm just not happy with the depth of bass from my 5 X 3's and I think the only way to improve on it is with bigger cones.

Hi Alex, ust the sort of reply I was looking for, I will be off to my stockist asap Thanks very much. Scott~Llandudno.

Hi Thanks for the info, just what I was looking for, it's times like this that forums are worth their weight. Scott~Llandudno

That's how I fitted mine - just watch the depth of the 6X9's, you don't want them too deep as it will lift the height of the parcel shelf up (there's not a lot of room under it)

If I can jump in late. I wouldn't waste time or money on the parcel shelf speakers. They only "fill in" the sound. Most of your sound, imaging etc will come from the door speakers. I have recently ditched the parcel shelf altogether and I don't miss the rear speakers.

I had a pair of quite good 6x4 Kenwood dual mag speakers and even that upgrade was not very noticeable. Spend as much as you can on front speakers is my advice and go as big as you can. The 5.75s are really too small to produce much bass. I used Infinity Reference components with separate speaker and crossover and they are nice, but I wish I had tried to squueze a 6.5 inch speaker in rather than 5.75s. The bigger 6.5s are quite easy to fit. A really nice head unit makes a difference - I have a Blaupunct London.

If anyone wants my Kenwoods please send a PM. They are under std grills with modified bases so they screw straight in and look stock.

Yes got a pair of Rear mounted twin outlet speakers, that give superb surround sound externally and in the cabin linked to the throttle......[:)]

Jacob, which 6 X 9 Infinities did you manage to sqeeze in the back? I've been offered some Infinity Kappa 693.5i and will take these if they'll fit.

Richard, quite agree with you, it is the fromnt speakers that matter the most in term of getting the best sound quality, strereo imaging etc...........but what I'm after is better low end bass and for that it doesn't matter where it comes from (the human ear (aledgedly) cannot detect the direction of very low frequencies)....hence the reason for upgrading my rears. Also my rear amp powering the rears is fairly substantial (whereas the front amp is not) which will be better suited to powering the low frequencies before running into distortion.

PS. How do I quote a previous post[]
