Which Stud!!!

Hi

I have 17 cup 2's on my C4.

Am I right in thinking the locking wheel nut should be closest to the valve?

And how do you determine which stud is for the locking nut if you have one not colour coded?

Thanks

Rob

ps - why do you have to put the locking nut on a specific stud?

Rob,

I'm no expert, but I understand the valve should face the colour coded stud - ie. "opposite". The locking wheel nut should be on the colour coded stud - ie. opposite the valve. For completeness, the centre cap should be positioned to point at the locking nut.

I'm not sure if it really matters if there isn't a colour coded stud. I think the important thing is to balance the wheel by having the locking nut opposite the valve.

What he says.......

THe red dots on the studs have worn off ages ago on my car -don't think it makes that much difference......

There is no reason to worry about this apart from Concourse preparation - and then the locking nut should be closest to the valve, with the tip of the centre cap badge pointing at them both. This is what I was told by my OPC who often provide judges for concourse.

They told me that the balance of the wheel takes the valve into account and that the locking stud is close enough to the center that it makes no difference.

Hope that helps.

as previous posts have suggested, I rather suspect it makes little difference balance-wise, since the wheels are balanced off of the car anyway! Having said that, I do wonder why Porsche Ag took the trouble to mark a particular stud and advise that the locking nut should be located on same. Maybe there is a balance allowance is in the hub rather than in the wheel.

However, for concourse purposes .................

The locking wheel nut position on 964's is dependant on the type of wheels fitted. The 16' design 90 style wheel should have the nut adjacent to the valve. The 17' cup design wheels should have the locking nut opposite the valve. In all cases the locking nut fits the red dotted stud. Aligning the center knock outs is purely for cosmetic reasons.
