Which Turbo to go for...

I've now owned my Carrera 3.2 Targa 1987 2 owner 50,000 mile Porsche for nearly a year. It is a great car and being an engineer by training one of the few "things" I have ever purchased and been fully happy with. However, and this is where I have lost my way. I want a Turbo, I've always wanted a turbo car and as yet never owned one (having reached 40 years think I deserve one!). The problem I am having is deciding which car to go for! I am far more interested in condition than actual model. I have just returned from the Brands event (well organised thank you) and am now even more confused...
I could just stretch and afford a 964 3.6 Turbo 2 but these are pushing £40k for the type of condition I am after. Would I rather pay a bit off the mortgage or buy the car? I also know where there is a nice example(Partner would prefer caravan and mortgage reduction!)
I'd love a low mileage 964 3.3 Turbo 2 but get mixed feedback on reliability and as yet have not seen a really nice lowish mileage option (less than 40.000)
Being a 930 owner already I like the feel of the "vintage" type of car and would love a 5 speed 89 car of the imaculate type (and there were several around today). I just missed out on a silver LE with 69,000 miles and "apparently" imaculate. it went for only £23,950 from a dealer spent the next week kicking myself
Do I want a 4 speed turbo?? there seem to be some nice examples for sale, but is that going backwards

I am a little confused, has anyone else had this dilema or does anyone have a "nice" car for sale that would suit a really fussy chap who is fairly new to Porsche ownership...

Mike,

I bought a lovely 964 T2 from Paul Deveya in Midnight Blue 66k for £30k

Had it for 6 weeks and i just cannot stop grinning..[:D][:D][:D]

Took me 4 months to find a decent one.

Picture attached.

He has a white one in stock for £35k only 29k miles

Maybe worth having a look it was out of my budget at the time but its though its just left the factory....very clean...and if colour does not bother you.

Mike,

Ditto to the 964 T2.

I bought an excellent silver example from Mark Sumpter at Paragon.

And the smile is still there

I also have a 964 T2 and I think the position was best summed up by Tom from 911 Virgin (where I bought it from) when he commented at Brands that it would be difficult to know where to go from here - a 993 Turbo would cost significant sums of money to move into and I could very easily be disappointed with the results.

3.3 engine is just fine - mine has a 1 bar boost spring and a Zucz Powerflow airfilter. Not been on a rolling road, but believe it gives about 360BHP - the very same as the Turbo 3.6...

Like you I had a 3.2 Carerra before and I would describe my Turbo off boost as very similar to my 3.2 at the same RPM, however at full tilt it is simply awesome!

I know we don't buy these for economy, but fuel consumption can come as quite a shock to 3.2 owners! Expect your Turbo to be VERY thirsty around town even if driven carefully (mid teens), not so bad on a run (low to mid twenties).

If you want a mint older 930 version, I understand Bob Week(e)s is going to sell his concours winning car if someone will pay him £35k or so....

Good luck and enjoy it when the time comes.

Concours winning 930's don't come up for sale very often - the last one went for in excess of £40k 2 years ago - and knowing what Bob wants to purchase, I don't see his car going any cheaper than that!

Well thank-you all very much, I seem to get the feeling that a 964 turbo 2 is the best and either a 3.3 or 3.6 pending cash vs condition etc. If I were looking on a 930 it would have to be around the 20k mark, maybe as high as £24 for a really good one but not up near the prices these concours obviously fetch!

Many thanks, if anyone else knows of a specific car for sale or could point me at someone who might be thinking about selling please do, I would appreciate it.

Cheers

Mike

Mike, I am just considering selling my 930 Turbo. My dilemma is I'm not sure what to get next on the Porsche front - If anyone can suggest a suitable replacement car I'd be grateful but my budget is limited to under £40K. That leaves a 993 S I guess - not overly exciting.

Anyway it's a 1989 5 speed, mint condition. I have owned her for ten years and am still in love! 49,300 miles on the clock, FPSH, all the extras plus LSD. Black leather red piping. 3rd car, dry use only. Brand new Cat 1 alarm, new battery. Adverts in Porsche post seem to range £22 - 24,000 for similar cars. I'm in no hurry as she has just been serviced by Mid Sussex Porsche and I want to get some value out the service! I'm a bit miffed that the brake service kit cost £240 whereas two years ago it was just £140. They claim Porsche dictate the pricing but seems a hefty price hike. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I have attached a photo (well I've tried to - this is my first forum). Feel free to get back to me.

Dear DJ

Car certainly looks nice in the photo, perhaps you could send me some details direct, such as number of owners, where serviced and when etc, please send to mikeacollins@btopenworld.com
I am still looking at 964 turbo as well as they may make a better everyday driver, I am also considering LHD and buying direct from Germany! They seem expensive though (more than LHD in UK for some reason)

Anyway please email me the details
Thanks

Mike,
Go for a LHD Turbo2! I did four years ago and it's still one of the best cars I've driven (it's a GREAT Porsche that still has the 'classic' shape).

I got mine from Oakhills - Indipendant Porsche Specalist (www.oakhills.co.uk/). Not sure if he's got a Turbo, but he did'nt when I got mine.

I gave him a 'spec list' (eg. colour, miles, etc) and he sourced one from Germany for me for a very reasonable cost after only about 2 - 3 weeks.

Best of luck

Shaun

How about an off the wall crazy third option, thought about supercharging the 3.2?

I did investigate this but drew a blank. All concerned seem to have stopped making supercharger kits for the 3.2 Carrera. For now I have sold the car to my brother and am Porscheless? I am really looking for a good clean 930 turbo 5 speed, but need to convince someone to sell theirs!
