Hi confusion of which tyres to fit to my 1983 911sc one tyre fitter says i need N compound tyres which need to go on all porsche the other says you only need them from 1985 & if i fit
W rated will be fine can anyone shed any light a i need 2 rear's a.s.a.p
Cheers
Hi - this is the 356 sub forum, not sure they make N rated tyres for 356's []
Regarding N rated tyres for a 911SC, choice is yours really - there were no N ratings in 1983, but I work on the assumption that N rated tyres are tested for compatibility with the rear engined handling characteristics of 911's so preferred to use them on my 3.2 when I had it.
Are N rated tyres available in the correct sizes?
Also note we are discussing the special "N" marking of tyres approved by Porsche - this is not the same as the speed rating letter

Depends whether you have 15 or 16 inch wheels; latter a bit more choice really.
N rated means that they have been developed in conjunction with Porsche. On the later cars, for insurance reasons, they "insist" on fitting N rated tyres as your insurance might get void etc. As you rightly pointed out, this industry designation was introduced with the 3.2 carrera so "technically" you have no problem with your SC is you don't "need" it.
Do bear in mind that N designation is a suffix and not a speed rating, http://www.blackcircles.com/general/speedrating
Top choice in 16 is typically is Bridgestone SO2 , Toyo Proxes TR1, Goodyear F1 GSD3, yokohama's o48 and Kumho's V70A in the hard compound and is fairly well priced. Most expensive is michelin, which is what I prefer as a brand.Michelin Pilot sport cup.
For 15 inch you have a more limited choice: Michelin once again, and some vredesteins who have an old style pattern but up to date rubber compounds, etc
