Which water pump?

The Saint.

My car is on 88k, and just thought it would be preventative maintenance to change the water pump. But there are so many different makes, its confusing. Then should I get metal or plastic impeller? Eurocarparts have a 25% offer on and they have a VM pump but is this a decent make? It says oem quality, but a lot say that, and there is such a difference in price. The VM is £164 after the 25% is taken off.

Avoid metal impellers - if the bearing goes at any point (which is usually what fails) then the metal impeller will lunch the crankcase.

A bearing normally fails over time and would expect other signs before it imploded. The 944 had either, but never heard of failure to this extreme.

Mine started leaking water at 50k miles. I bought a known brand after reading recommendations on forums. Quite a big job on the turbo and if I recall there was no option of a plastic impeller for this model. Worth changing your plugs and coil packs while you are under there - I had to remove the exhaust and lower the engine off of the rear mounts to fit the pump, so it made it a lot easier to get to the plugs etc. No point risking part quality - you won't want to be doing it again anytime soon!

I thought that anything off Eurocarparts with 'VM' was original parts? Could be wrong though...

Euro are really good for parts

BUT
Try Porsche Main Dealer first and mention Porsche Club Membership
Porsche now have a company policy of supporting all older cars
Also look at the prices for labour on older Porsches these ar very competative

I helped my mate change the water pump on his '98 C2 after the original failed. We fitted a new pump with metal impeller and noticed the temp actually runs slightly cooler. Not sure if this is just because its newer though and simply working more efficiently. I'd go with metal myself. Good luck with it. John.

The Euro Car Parts VM one is a Genuine Porsche part (VM = Vehicle Manufacturer), they are selling at a loss at that price

Lasso or Geba are as good and should be cheaper
