Whilst having the clutch replaced....

My car has just gone in to JZM for a new clutch. Whilst it is in and the gearbox etc.. will be out what else should I consider having done. Money is definately an object so sensible suggestions only please.

There are a couple of sensors to replace "while you are in there" and the engine is old. I would have to check my build sheet to tell you which ones but there are some.

I would also recommend (if budget extends) looking at a lightweight spring centred clutch. If you want to save some weight you can also look at an aluminium pressure plate and a light flywheel. I have just gone for a 930 sport disc which is spring centred (rather than rubber) and is much lighter weight together with higher clamp force plus the aluminium PP. I passed on the flywheel as there is little weight to be saved there as the 3.2 F/W is already light (like 964RS ballpark). The clutch still bites like a normal clutch and the action is just a tad heavier now that it has bedded in. The engine revs more quickly due to the reciprocating weight saving and feels just a little more sporting without being a bear to drive and stalling all the time - its has stalled once when cold in 1500 miles despite having lumpy cams to contend with in my setup. I cannot pick any difference in NVH and I will never have to worry about the exploding rubber centred clutch syndrome. Parts are readily available from Patrick Motorsport in Arizona among others. I can send details offline.

While the engine is out, now would also be a perfect time to go for an SSI exhaust, heater backdate, some cams, top end rebuild....[;)]

Hi Shirish,

It is in JZ's workshop at the moment. It is due to be started on Tuesday (tomorrow). I took it in last week as it was pretty bad and wasn't really driveable. Their prices are on their website http://www.jzmachtech.co.uk/. It is about £1100 including VAT.
I did make a couple of calls to other garages. Autostrasse in Essex were a bit cheaper although didn't give an exact amount and it is not so easy for me to get to and back from. Porsche in Silverstone was about £1600, so I opted for JZM who have serviced my car before and is easy for me to get to and from and IMHO give a good service.

Rgds,

Kevin

Kevin - Don't know if your having anything else done, but it sounds expensive to me.

I was quoted about £700-£800 by Nick at Auto 2000 in Kempston nr Bedford who looks after alot of our regions cars.

Had mine done by TWG in Peterborough for £800, though the service aspect was not great.

Steve,

Was that 700-800 +VAT or incl. £800 +vat is £940, but at the end of the day it is all about trusting the garage that you choose and what you think is value for money regards the overall service etc...

I know JZ are not the cheapest, but I do like their service and they drop me to the train station (in work within 40 mins) and pick me up when I return.

Rgds,

Kevin

Kevin - It included VAT. It was only their customer service that was a little off.

I use Nick at Auto 2000 now. He just did a 12,000 mile service (excluding oil as this had been changed with the clutch) and fitted a new front n/s wheel bearing for £220 inc VAT. He also spotted a couple of little things for me to do myself during the summer.

Top bloke.

Just as an aside, a few weeks after that I had a screen fitted by Tower Porsche in London. I asked what they would have charged me for the work and they said "about £700 inc. VAT."

Just a thought, are the quotes including a new flywheel or flywheel resurfacing or assuming the flywheel is ok to re-use? Could explain some of the differences. Probably why Steve quoted a minimum. Mine was reusable after 75,000 miles FWIW.

Yes- well its stripped for installation of a cage. Unfortunately there is an 8 week wait on cages because Safety Devices has gone bust and everyone is scrambling around trying to find alternative suppliers. I am getting a Wiechers 6-point bolt in cage from Germany. Did Steve have the engine out yet?

Can you feel the difference in the engine mounts?

Cheers,
Richard
