Whine and moan

Hilux

New member
Just got back from a tour around Holland with my 951 and R24

Great fun, great weather, the car was faultless (thanks Nick at auto2000) and I`m completely gobsmacked and totally smitten with the car with even more respect for its abilities. Also you really can drive 300 miles and not even notice - superb.

I could recount tales of easily keeping pace with other serious 911's, v v high speeds on unrestricted autobahns, embarrasing M3`s, Maseratis etc etc..............

Anyway, I digress..............

The car has developed a high pitched whine with a low pitched moan that appears to be from the clutch/back of engine so I wondered if it was torque tube transmitted noise from the gearbox. (It had a v slight whine anyway)

I believe it is gearbox related as it is most noticeable in 5th gear with a v v light throttle. If you ease into overun, with the engine coasting it disappears or with mild throttle etc it disappears. It is not as prevalent in other gears.

Should I worry?

Sounds very similar to what mine does. In 4th and 5th gear only on very light throttle at low speeds (circa 50mph) I get a high pitched whine. It's done this since I've owned the car (7 months ish) and the previous owner said it'd been there for the 18 months he'd owned it. He had it checked out by Redline Racing and rather than suggest an expensive re-build they told him not to worry about it and just turn up the stereo!

It's not got any worse and perhaps has even improved slightly since the gearbox oil was changed.

Mine had a very minor whine but after sustained high speeds it got a bit louder. It seems to be worse at higher speeds (80 mph) and is a lot quieter at normal speeds.

Sure it's not a rear wheel bearing?

Hi Andrew

Thanks for the input. I do not believe it is a wheel bearing as it is definitely throttle sensitive, not constant and not speed or corner loading related. The noise comes right from where the clutch is but I cannot figure oiut what it might be at that part of the car.

Note that I had really bad groaning noises from the rear on tight L/H corners at the last track day I attended and thought it was a bearing (I still do but now consider that it may be a CV joint under extreme loads) as it was corner related ie: only happened on L/H corners but JZM said it was probably a pinion bearing and unless it got worse leave well alone. It seems to have disappeared so I`ll have to track it again to `track` it down.

Only thing I can add is that sometimes (in my experience) when a wheel bearing wears out rather than gets damaged by a knock against a kerb it can produce a speed dependant whine which I found was noticable most at 100+ and got louder with speed. The whine was almost like a note or hum but sounded almost super sonic by 130+ I found that for a while this bearing did not display the thud thud thud I was used to from an impact damaged wheel bearing and only when it was really bad did it do that. I replaced it and whine went with it[:)] ...mind you I have also had two differentials wear out/brake on me in 944's!! but they sounded like a far heavier and more obvious hum and clatter.

I like your style, any excuse eh [:D]

No point in worrying about it. If it breaks it breaks but the wife will NOT be amused [][][/blockquote]
