Whine at idle/low revs

Ok, my second post in 24hrs of ownership! There's a whine at idle which disappears pretty soon as the revs mount. Drove 100 miles yesterday without it, so it seems to be when it's cold. Sounds like some kind of belt, although I'm too new to all of this to swear by it.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Hi and welcome to 944 ownership.

It could be a number of different things, but I had a distinct whine from the power steering pump, which was because the fluid was low. So that's one area to check, especailly as the pipes are prone to corrosion and subsequent leaks.

Could be your alternator belt too, so worth a look at that.

Anyway, how about showing us some pictures of your new car?

easy way to find out, spray some WD40 on the alternator belt and if the whine disappears that's what it is.

(Old car dealers trick to quieten them down when they have been idle for a while)

Mine did the same when I first got it, but is fine since I had the Cambelt done and TWG obviously re-tensioned the alternator belt

Slightly different circumstances cause wine on the different belts. The alternator belt will whine like mad if a bit loose conversely the balancer shafts belt will whine if set too tight. On the later cars with spring tensioner or hydraulic tensioner (968) can the cam belt be set too tight? I guess so.
