Whine from engine/transmission.

Collected brand new 987s 3.2 manual last week. Great car, but I noticed that there is a definite whine from the engine or transmission which rises and falls with the engine revs, even when the car is stationary. If the car wasn't brand new I'd say it sounds like a duff alternator or water pump bearing. It's obviously more noticeable at low speed and highish revs and drowns out the exhaust noise until I accelerate hard. The salesman says its normal. Is it? Black8OXSA says there shouldn't be any transmission whine but I'm not sure now if it is the transmission.

P.S. I've mentioned this in a previous post but having had the car for a few days now I'm better able to describe the 'problem'.

We've just got a new 3.2S and can report a similar noise - sound a bit like a jet engine. Its not the transmission because if you dip the clutch and rev the engine its still there. Have to be honest and say it does not cause me any concern. I think its the tightness in the new engine as i'm noticing it less with miles (around 250 now). I personally would not worry about it - it is definately engine not transmission if we are describing / hearing the same.

The only whine in my old boxster used to come from the passenger seat for going to quick. Enjoy.

I've got the same, at 275 miles.

Amazing car. I'm addicted to driving the damn thing. Last two nights I've avoided the sherbets just to go on a late blat. Temperature at the 0 degree level, steady snow, new tyres and just about bedded in brakes has however made for some nervousness on behalf of the pilot. Car didn't miss a beat however. Not so much as a slight slip. It's probably saving up something big for later!

It's still clearly running in but the surefootedness of it has left just about everyone else on the road standing (I've not been over 4000 rpm yet) and me open mouthed. Its the level of communication you get from the car, it lets you know when to ease up and when to push on (so far).

If the whine rises with engine speed when stationary I'd imagine it's coming from something like the alternator. I'm sure it's not normal so I'd be straight back to the OPC to get them to take another look.

I think this 'whine' noise should be clarified - certainly from my viewpoint. The 'whine' is not a seperate noise in addition to the engine noise, it is part of the noise made by the engine. To be honest if I hadn't read the previous thread containing this comment then i would not have noticed it. I really do think its the noise made by the 'clean' engine and as soon as things bed in it won't be noticed. It seems to me that 3 new 987S's can't all have the same 'fault' if thats what it is - its too much of a co-incidence. I would say that your salesman Critch was telling the truth (even though his lips were moving) hehe!
Having said that if anyone does get it checked out then let us know.
Ohhhh...just enjoying my free bottle of champers - very nice!
