Whine from speakers

Morning all,

Since i got my S2 ive noticed a whine coming from one or more of the speakers which exactly matches the engine speed ie the noise gets higher pitched as the engine speed rises. Anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Cheers

Almost certainly alternator, caused perhaps by the brushes or the diode pack or both needing replacement.
A bad earth may also cause the same problems.
A good auto-electrician will diagnose and will be a whole heap cheaper than just 'fixing' things in the hope.

I'm no car audio expert, but I'd say it's picking up the alternator, I had this when I had a brief fling with car audio before I had my 944.

Are you using a seperate amplifier or is everything in the headunit?

If you have a power amplifier just try dropping its input gain, this might be sufficient on its own. Also make sure the cable between head unit and amplifier are short and of good quality (loops of spare cable are a bad idea, for example). Adding ferrites and possibly an isolating transformer are other options.

If you've just got a self contained head unit then I suspect it's a bit more tricky. I'd try to hunt out if there's something amiss in the car first, a poor ground or similar (either at the radio end or related to the engine electronics).

Other than that I'd check to see if it just does it on the radio or on CD as well, you could try disconnecting the aerial input as it's a potential source for interference, especially as there's an aerial amplifier on these cars (it could possibly even cause noise on the CD input if it was strong enough).

There are so many sources of noise that I suspect it might be a bit tricky to resolve quickly, but if you can give us some more information it will help (stereo model number and so on).

hahaha took me a few seconds then [:)]

The headunit is the original factory one with a tape player and cd input jack, the car is getting its sills replaced at the moment so im not sure of its exact make and model. Ill pop down and have a look some time.

I had the same thing happening with the OE Blaupunkt stereo, but this has now dissapeared since replacing it with a new Kenwood stereo.

Cheers,
Robbo
