Whine! Help!

I had a small leak from the rear diff and a slight whine. A local mechanic changed the diff oil and added some sort of addative to relax the seal to hopefully stop the leak. Good news is that the leak has gone, however the whine seems to be a little worse (could be my imagination?).

What I wanted to ask was whether this is a common proplem on 944's which is what I'm led to believe. I've been told to turn the radio up and not to worry about it, however I don't want the thing to 'let go' at high speed as it would probably be a little unnearving to say the least.

The noise is there on overrun in a high gear, but then as you apply load it goes momentarily but then as the load takes up the slack it comes back. So in a nutshell it's there under load and under engine braking but not in between. I'm thinking that it could be an input bearing or something similar as opposed to the diff itself?

I just wondered what you guys thought it could be and if it's anything worth getting worried about. My other concern is whether the mechanic has put the correct diff oil in which could have caused the increase in volume.

Any advice would be great!

Hi James

Answering your questions, your mechanic could have put in something like 75w90 whereas others swear by 75w140. But then some people say the brand you choose is more important with many saying Swepco is the "one". Your symptoms sound identical to mine, and I've accepted that it's part of the 944 character. I put in some Castrol 75w140 for what it's worth.

You might also have a bit of noise coming from the torque tube bearings too which isn't unheard of (no pun intended...)

Finally you might have output bearing noise, but that's more of a rumble than a whine I believe. Let us know what you discover.

Cheers

They're all noisy, mine was. I changed to Swepco and it was a little quieter but not much. Bloody stinks, that stuff....[X(]

Thanks for the advice, it sounds like it's something to put up with and to perhaps change the oil for something a little thicker. Much appreciated!

The whine is very high pitched and the best thing I can compare it to is a straight-cut gearbox noise only far far quieter and only noticable if you have the radio off and listen out for it.

The first Turbo Cab that I drove howled like a banshee: and it had covered under 15,000 miles... They really do all do it, its just the degree which varies. Swepco can help.
