whine noise coming from front of the car

Hi guys,
Hope you can help me. I have borrowed my sisters '98 Boxster 2.5 while she is on holidays. What a car! Anyway, I went out a little while ago to drive to the shops and when I started the engine there was a whining noise coming from the car. It wasn't there earlier today. I got out and had a listen. It's coming from the front in behind the wheels. Sounds like some sort of motor and is high pitched. I drove for about 5 miles but it's still there. Any ideas as to what it is? Hope it's not serious as I can't afford to go to the dealers.
Thanks in advance,
Alex.

There are cooling fans in the front for radiators and aircon condensers. Probably one of those. They do make quite a whirring noise. They are (obviously) thermostatically controlled, so will switch on and off on demand.

I'm not sure that its a fan. I did hear a fan come on today but this noise is very high pitched. Is there an oil pump for an oil cooler in the front?

Sounds quite a metallic whirr/whine. TTBOMK there aren't any pumps at the front - they are all at the back. There are two/three radiators on the front for engine coolant, aircon, and tiptronic (if you have it). There are two fans - offside for coolant and nearside for aircon My money is on the coolant fan motor.

My guess is that its a fan of some sort - perhaps a bearing gone in it or something.. There cant be that many high speed moving parts up there !

Best get someone to have a look at least I think..

Actually though I hate saying it - they arent too bad. The charge 110 euro per hour - and I guess if you ask them nicely they may even look at it for free. Assuming they can identify it quickly, it really shouldnt cost that much to find out (a) whats wrong and (b) whats involved in fixing it. They may only charge you for a half hour if its a quick look.

There are a few specialists around dublin, but to be honest, they will probably charge you 75 or 80 euro a hour anyway. At least the official route, the repair is warrantied. I guess you just need to get it up on a ramp and try to see where its coming from...

In fairness, assuming you borrowed the car and not 'borrowed' the car from your sister - you cant really be held accountable for it developing a fault [;)]

Give Laurna a ring on 01 404 9911 and ask can you drop over for someone to have a quick look at it. I'm sure they will fit you in. At the end of the day, the car is driving ok, so it may not be that major...

Thanks for the replys guys. I'll try Belgard in the morning. (I'm in Dublin by the way). And I'll make sure to use those jokes as well. :ROFLMAO:
