Whining - from the engine, not the passengers...

Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone could help with another query?

My 1998 Boxster 986 (99,000 miles) has developed a whine coming from the engine compartment (passenger side I think...). It's related to the RPM of the engine, not the speed of the car. Very noticable when cold, gets quieter as the engine warms up. Had a new timing belt fitted last summer as part of a major service.

Dont know if it's relevant, but PC Newcastle fitted two new radiators in July. Anybody got any ideas?? I'm concerned that something may be worn or about to let go, and as it's my only car, I'm quite keen to avoid any more big bills and inconvenience!

Thanks in advance folks!

Andy.

It was a few years ago and was done by an independent garage up here and a major service was included. Around £685 including parts and labour. The water pump was £173 gasket £4. Add around £100 or more for labour at an independent a lot more at a OPC. That was in 2009 prices will have gone up. The bulkhead behind the drivers seat has to be removed and the V belt and pump can be accessed from there. If your handy with a spanner it is a job you can DIY.

Thanks mate, thats really useful to know. Sadly I'm useless with the spanners so looks like I'm going to have dig deep.... again.
