Whining noise off throttle

In the market for a 944, went to see one today, number of issues with the car, the most concerning was a whining noise when not accelerating, engine braking to junction for example. Seller reasons a common thing to do with torque tunnel. Is this the case? Is it an expensive fix?

Also odometer wasn't working, speedo did, again he reakoned speedo drive but speedo was working so surely this would the the gauge? I didn't buy it, to many things needed attention but curious on the noise so I'm better informed for the next one that I go to see.

Thanks

Did it sound like a noisy clutch release bearing? if so it is probably the tourque tube bearings. its an expensive fix!

Worth having a drive in a few other cars: can you get to the Dyno day next weekend? I'm sure loads of us would be happy to take you out.

The gearboxes are often noisy without it being a problem, and it's not a sound you get in other cars so can seem wrong at first.

I had to fix problems with these symptoms on my 86 Turbo.

The whining turned out to be a collapsing gearbox / differential bearing allowing the crownwheel to misalign hence the whine. (expensive)

Odometer not working was due to one of the little gears inside the speedo which drives the odometer crumbling (fiddly but easy fix but the new gear came from the USA)

Not sure if this was the same on your prospective purchase but sounds like you made the right decision.

My whining 944 turned out to be the pinion gear in the rear diff. Wasn't a ludicrously expensive fix when it failed, I sourced a 2nd hand replacement but it did mean a new gearbox. £500 at the time. Possibly more now as that was 10-11 years ago.

As Ive said over many years, I saw a nearly new Turbo Cab whose transaxle screamed like a banshee. Theres even a copy of a letter from AFN/PCGB stating that they all do that Sir...

Of course, the fact that the pinions could be noisy on some cars when new doesn't mean that a noisy car thirty years later isn't about to fail.

Thanks for the replies, after sleeping on it I'm sure I've made the right decision, whining noise aside there were too many things that needed attention. I think the Dyno thing is too far, I'm in Aberdeen Scotland, plus I'm lining up to go see a s2 next weekend anyway, at a dealer but last owner apparently had it 20 years plus doesn't have any of the issues the one yesterday had ( according to seller) so fingers crossed.

ORIGINAL: 944 man

Not Buchanan (or whatever their name is now)???

No but I they do have one for sale there, looks mint but more than I want to pay. Do u know something u want to share bout them?!

The one I'm looking at now is in Preston, was on ebay few weeks back. Silver, pics showed it on a private plate.

They appear to buy likely cars for peanuts and then clean them up. Well presented but massive margins. If I buy a £10,000 944 then I want a £10,000 car and not a £3,000 car polished and valeted.

Stuey I have been reading your posts and I am getting a bit concerned about your search for a 944. The Porsche Club Regional organiser in your area is Steve Rose and he runs a very nice 944 S2. If you contact him I am sure he would be willing to let you see his car and he may know of a good car for sale in your area. I would make him my first point of contact when looking for a car.You can contact him on the forum through the Scotland section or if you Pm me I'll point you in his direction.

Agreed. Don't even think of buying an old car without meeting owners, looking over their cars, and learning what to look for.

There's so much on this year it's easy to find a 944 gathering somewhere. If you're a long way from most events, then you'll also be looking at a smaller selection of cars locally, so doubly important to learn from other's experience before you buy.

Rutland is perfect, as there will be 20-plus cars and owners there.

He's in Aberdeen Paul. Steve Rose is the RO up there and he runs an S2. He would be the best guy to talk to in his area.

I can second what Paul has posted, do not jump in with both feet, get yourself on the forums (which you already have) also get a look on the TIPEC 944 forum and talk to people who own them and get to some meets.
Local owners to you will i am sure take you out and may let you drive their cars so you get to know them.
Buy a good un and they are great, though one of mine is causing me grief at the moment, part of owning an old classic !

ah sorry guys forgot to post in this part (I did put abit up on the Scotland section) I got one at the tail end of Jan, against my original plan of holding out for a local car I landed doing a 600mile round trip for one, on the plus side thats 300miles back in a Porsche! Its a good een and worth the trip so I'm now the owner of a 89 944 S2 in silver. Full service history and in very good condition with no nasty noises. Couple of bits to tidy up to make it how I would like, made a start on the centre arm rest last weekend with a nic new leather piece (PS upholstery is an art it took me about 2hrs to get it on and looking right!)
