Whining Noise over 30 mph?

Guest

Hello - need some advice please. I have an intermittent whining noise coming from the rear of the car above 30 mph. Can be in any gear but the strange thing is below 30 mph it stops totally.
Ninemeister have checked it out and done the following - tried a new driveshaft, replaced wheel bearings (which needed to be changed) and changed the gearbox oil totally.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Kind regards
Dave

Hi,
Odd you should mention as Friday I got the pair replaced on the back but its still doing it...

The reason that I mentioned it is because back in 2000, late summer, I had a puncture repair in the right rear tyre. When it got to late October and the temperature was generally lower at about 20 mph and above a horrible wailing sound emanated from the rear of the car. Below this speed it went away. This went on all winter with the car going in to the OPC twice - the second occasion for two weeks. They could neither find, or consistently reproduce the problem. I endured this until the spring when it appeared to go away on its own accord.

One thundery afternoon in early summer I was driving home from work with the top down. I passed under an isolated cloud which had just dumped a pile of hailstones and the temperature dropped considerably. As soon as I did so the wailing sound reappeared only to disappear as soon as I passed out from under the cloud. On inspecting the rear wheel I noticed that the rubber plug used in the repair had not been trimmed ( the nail had gone in right in the middle of a groove in the tread.)

The tyres went a couple of months later through wear and tear and so did the noise.

Strange but true.[&:]
