Whining noise when starting up cold

Hi,

I had to replace the rocker-cover gasket on saturday and thought that whilst i was removing the cambox i might as well replace the cam belt and other belts.

Since i have done this when starting the car in the morning it makes a whining sound and when revving it sounds ridiculous. It is however perfect when warm.

Doeas anyone know why this is?? Could it be the belts wearing in or are they too tight/loose??

That is backwards for noise level on the balance shaft and timing belt. Usually balance shaft belt that gets a louder whine as the block warms up because it is too tight.

I'd check the alt/AC belt for being too loose. That is supposed to be tensioned to 85 lbs which is really tight. So it slips on startup but starts to grab when it finally gets hot enough and some of the duty to recharge the battery slacks off.

Our S2 has covered approx 2k miles since cambelt change.

It whines when cold too.

I'm sure I read on here that it's quite common......just can't find the thread. [&:]

I agree with IceShark - balance belts are usually noisy when too tight and this tends to increase as the engine warms up. I would check them again as soon as you can just in case.
