Whining noise

Hi,

Only had my 1991 944 S2 since last August....great buy. Very happy so far but just dont know enough about the car yet. Had all the belts replaced couple of months ago and the front pads plus some other bits and pieces (bit costly but ok) all done at Tom Fergusons up here in sunny Newcastle.

My question is, are 944's know for a whining noise when sat idling or driving, i.e. sounds to me as a lay-person, that its the belts but not sure if its normal or the new belts not tensioned correctly or something else all together. All ideas appreciated. Dont want to be the garages best customer and skint as a result!

Has anyone experience of having a 944 waxoyled? A local place does a full days work all panels and sections for just over £300....makes sense to me but wanted some advice from someone with knowledge...for example does it cause problems for maintenance etc or is it a must do to preserve the car (I live 200 metres from the sea!)

Cheers

Andrew

Andrew, if you are getting a whining noise, your balance belt will probably be too tight or your waterpump or rollers are on their way out. Waxoyling is very good as long as everything is sound underneath the car!

Sulzeruk, your in box is full, i have tried to PM you Jim.

Rustproofing a lot of people are giving Bilthammer (sp) the thumbs up though not tried it myself.

I thought it was standard practise to replace the rollers every belt change?

When I got mine it was whining like crazy, sounded more like an electric car than a Porsche but after slackening off the balance belt it quietened down dramatically. Still need to do a belt change on mine before it gets on the road.

Whining from an over-tensioned balance belt or worn water pump is very common. The only noise should be the standard whining from the gearbox. [&:]

Waxoyl, or bilthamber, get it done. Most people look at the outside of their 944 and think it looks fine. Maybe the odd blister on the sills, but only small. The cars have a layer of underseal along the bottom, and this holds together extremely rusty wings and sills. I've looked at a company that does a stripping, undersealing, and treat all box sections service for around £400 in the south east. I think it's worth considering, perhaps every couple of years, to avoid major bodywork repairs costing £000s.

Paul - what's the name of the company you know?

To the OP - I considered the full waxoyl treatment up here (think the guy is in Morpeth) but decided against it. I have used Dynax S50 in the sills and box sections though and would really reccommend it too. I have the other side to do on mine so am more than happy to show you what to do and have a listen to your belts - am in Gosforth.

Typical. I didn't bookmark it and can't find it again! []

Was a company near Heathrow that do the same thing as the company here, I guess they all do the same thing by stripping the old underseal where loose, treating an corrosion and re-undersealing, and then doing all the cavities.

Guys....many thanks for the rapid replies, this is my first time on the forum and the support is appreciated. I will follow up with the garage and check they replaced the rollers though assumed they had otherwise overtight or water pump sounds likely offender.

The electric car example sums up the sound perfectly, you can see people looking and thinking, nice old porsche...oohhh not nice noise. Even my wife said recently, thats a strange noise is that normal....ermm probably not but not really sure!! Must be bad if the person who can drive a just serviced family car for 3 months before telling me its not right (misfiring!) spots it.

cheers again.

Cheers Eldavo, it was the place in morpeth that I was quoted from. Wouldnt mind someone knowledgeable like yourself having a quick listen to see what the whining maybe. I am in Tynemouth and work up in Cramlington so easy for me to make a minor diversion at some point. The detailing pictures you have posted are impressive. Not done anything like that yet but its getting close. I dont have a driveway to take advantage of though just a garage so tricky for space and power/water.

Let me know where you are and I will call in sometime that is convenient. I am away this weekend, is evening or weekend best in general?

Mine whined after the belts/rollers/water pump job, but quietened down after the re tension at 2000mls. As Paul says, the only significant noise is the gearbox chatter on idle...as they say "they all do that", and you'll find threads on here explaining why.

I've found that the whining noise in my car is usually either the wife or the kids! [8|]

[:D][:D][:D][:D] thanks that made me chuckle[;)]

my S2 has a whistling noise . Bystanders describe it like a jet aircraft about to take off ? had it for over 2x years now and nothing has gone bang so I guess its a normal intake noise
