Hi guys
just had some work done on my 88 3.2 to get it through mot , when i picked up the car it seems to be a 'whistle' under acceleration coming from the back of the car. I seem to remember reading a thread about a noise like this but cant find it. Anyone got any ideas????

I see you didn't go the TVR route then Martin? Not sure if you remember but I was fairly interested in your black 3.2 a few months ago. Cheers

If your car has the v-belt sensor like a 964,the centre bearing can give out a whistle(bearing in the plastic wheel)

No turbo fitted!!![:(] the noise only seems to have started since the mot work was done. I have ordered an air flow sensor ( CO cant be adjusted) so maybe the faulty one is causing the noise.

I spent ages trying to track down why my CO2 was way out, swapped Air Flow Meters about etc... in the end it just turned out to be the vacuum pipe from behind the intake manifold to the vacuum on the righthand side of the engine bay (near the oil filler)

Maybe worth a check, as the rubber splits at the ends thus not creating a good seal, all I had to do was you cut back about 1/2 an inch, and my CO2 could then be adjusted from 4.5% to 1.7%, which sorted teh luppy idle as well.

Has the MOT station fitted a turbo? [:D]

Actually Martin, I reckon E554 has a bit of a sucking noise coming from the back which I didn't have on my Targa (or maybe I didn't notice because of the roof noise) - it sounds a bit like the twin SUs I used to have on my Mini Cooper and I put it down to the K&N you had fitted.

Well just back from having the new air flow sensor fitted ,brought CO down from 3 to 1.5. asked about the whistle while i was there ,the mechanic thinks its air being sucked through the cone air filter.cant say i noticed it before but there you go!!

Car goes for mot tomorrow ,hope there is nothing else to do this one has cost me £700 so far.[:-]

Well car passed mot no problem.I ordered 2 new breather pipes (30mm black ones going to the oil tank area) I thought this may stop the 'whistleing noise' the old pipes were very badly cracked but it didn't and now when I remove the oil filler cap to check the oil level the engine stalls!!! I now have to pinch one of the breather pipes closed to stop the engine stalling while I check oil levels.
Whats going on???[&:]

I am sure that I have read somwhere that the engine stalling is not uncommon if you have a cone filter fitted. I am no expert and do not have 1 myself so it is just my £0.02 worth.

Kevin

thanks for that kevin I will email you my account details for the 2p.
the car runs fine at all other times ie no slalling when cold easy to start etc. Just had a thought ..it may be because it was resetup( new word warning) with a new airflow meter while it still had the cracked pipes. may just need mixture redone???

I had the same "problem" when I replaced my breather hoses a couple of years ago. Hopefully you haven't thrown away the old breather hoses. One of the old hoses will have a small metal cone shaped insert at the oil filler end. Make sure you transfer this cone to the new hose (with the point of the cone in the same direction), otherwise the car will continue to stall when removing the oil filler cap.

I believe squeezing the breather hose has the same reducing effect as that performed by the cone.

Hope this helps.

Anil

Thanks Kevin and Anil you were both right and luckily i am slow to clear away old parts ( found the insert where you suggested)
