whistling clutch...

I have recently been a bit baffled by a light whistling noise that occurs when the clutch is depressed.

I ran it past my Dad (who is a bit of a car nut) at the weekend and he seemed to think it may be the thrust bearing, and that he thought it unlikely that the bearing would fail, or if it was going to, i would get a lot noisier before it went.

Anyone any thoughts?

Thanks

Matt

Hi Fen,

Do you think that the bearing might whistle away quite happily, without actually failing, for quite a long time?

My car has covered 95K and is on its first clutch, so i would rather wait until that fateful day to replace both. Were the bearing to go first, I guess it would make sense to replace the clutch at the same time anyway.

Yes - they don't get a heavy load (as they are only under load when the clutch is in) so you should be fine for a while.

Unlike gearbox bearings, which I have found (to my cost, and alsmost my life...... not in the porker though) should be replaced when they start to whine []

Thats about right Matt, I would start looking around at the cost of clutch kits & check the cost of having it fitted.

I have a brand new clutch that was just fitted to the 2.7 engine I bought for my engine rebuild. I was going to EBAY it when I get my car back but send me an email if you're interested.

I had to get a complet new clutch kit at about 100K miles too, £600 for parts, labour and vat...not a cheap job, but if Porsche will put the clutch in a very difficult place to get to, who are we to argue!

Hmm.

I have the opposite -

I have a metallic groaning from my S2 which goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. I had assumed that this would be the release bearing, and consequently imagined that it would be resolved when the new clutch is fitted, but now I'm not so sure!

Justin.

My guess is that the release bearing may still be the cause - it probably drags and still rotates even when the clutch pedal is released. Yours is a minor noise associated with the bearing turning with no load, more commonly they grumble under load (when the clutch pedal is pushed).

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the offer but i think i'm going to see if the bearing and clutch will stay with me for a little while longer, post christmas finances being what they are!

Best

Matt
