White dials

I would like to replace my white dials with the original black ones, anyone know where to get a set or want to do a swap?? I have checked Porscheshop design911 and paragon, they only seem to do non standard (white, silver etc)

Are they replacement dials or just stickers?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Stickers tend to have black "windows" for the warning lights whereas sets where the whole of all dials is white are replacements.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I bought a spare dash for an mph speedo once and it came with white sticker dials. They peeled off fine and the only mistake I made was in using nail varnish remover on a bit of adhesive that was left on the fuel gauge and it attacked the black. Remove the needles and peel carefully, and stick with warm soapy water and elbow grease if you get any adhesive remaining and you'll be fine.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If they are replacements then you need to find someone to swap with, but that isn't too bad as the replacements look OK and someone will want them.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If anyone thinks from my last statement I am implying the stickers do not look OK then you're absolutely right. They are bloody awful with those big black cut outs.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If you're deperate then buy a set of instruments from a breaker like Porschapart.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Just looked at your album - they are stickers (I can see why you want to get rid of them!).[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Take your time and there is a set of nice black dials under there.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'm saying nothing about the wooden stereo [8D][FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Cheers Fen,

I know [:'(]!!! what kinda prat puts a nasty fake wood plastic stereo in a car with black interior [:(]??? That is going to be replaced very soon as I too hate it with a passion [:D] I am hoping I can just get a new front and surround without having to replace the whole thing

If I take the needles off, how do I know what position they should be in?? I think when they were replaced they were put back incorrectly as my turbo gauge seems to over read and my fuel gauge never shows any more than 3/4 full??

I forget if they all have stops. If they do then they should just rest on them with the power off, if they don't it's trickier if the person who fitted the dials got them slightly wrong.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]When you do take them off do it very carefully - they just pull off but you do not want to bend the spindle. You get a needle puller with the sticker kit I think but getting one separate might be tricky. eBay?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I would be grateful if somebody can post a pic of their instruments with the needles showing the correct positions [:D] (turbo only please, as I think this one is the one most out of whack [8D]) Cheers

I thought of that but mine are 30 miles away so unless you can wait a couple of days it's over to someone else...

No worries Fen, I wonder if the manual shows the gauges at rest? [8|] I will check tonight

Pulled this apart so you can see.
You need to unscrew the nine screws from the back of the dial cluster. This will remove the dials from the surround.
The needles will come off relatively easily. Probably the easiest way is with a small pair of curved pliers. Place the pliers so that they are under the middle of the needle and 'roll' pliers so they push up (lever) the needle. You can remove by fingers and use pressure to pull up, straight.
Panel wipe or lighter fluid should be fine to remove any glue residue if you use a small amount. The originals are plastic, so nail varnish remover will marr (sp?) Alcohol as oppose to acetone. Keep it for your nails Fen[;)]
The needles work electromagnetically. If you place the needle roughly in the correct position on the spindle lightly but enough for it to turn, lightly move the needle round slightly and then allow it to fall back. It will return to it's 'first' position. You correct it by turning the needle one way or the other and check again. When happy, press down firmly in place.
Job done, walk away.

Dan.....Let me know if the sticker removal does not work, I think I have a set of black faces in the loft.

I also have a set of clocks with white dials (not stickers), I bought them off ebay for £90 but the wife did not like them (wants silver to match the car). If anybody wants them make me a reasonable offer! I can not guarantee them as I have not used them but the faces are the expensive type.

Mike

Cheers for the info chaps, I am going to give it a go tomorrow, let you know how I get on. Might try and get a front for the ghastly stereo as well [:-]

Not having read all of the above so apologies if it has already been mentioned but, it is pretty much obligatory to fit the Flamingeye instrument lights while you have the pod out. You'll regret it if you don't.

Oh, and I can't get my fuel gauge much above 3/4 full either.

I did actually check out the flaming eye website, but Darren doesn't seem to be taking orders at the moment???

IMO they look awful because they have cutouts on the smaller dials for the warning legends to be visible through, so you get 2 round dials and two in a weird H-shape.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Porsche used to do some for the 968 that were not like that, but they are probably discontinued and certainly would be expensive.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I have a set of proper replacement guage faces from ebay USA with the correct 180mph speedo. The seller does not have any listed at the moment but you could try their email address.

I don't know if they are still trading or not.

I think Prestige Parts had some full guage faces a while back too.

I looked at a car recently with them, and I guess its personal taste, but like Fen I thought they looked naff. Leave well alone IMO of coarse
