Who does your PPI?

This raises a slightly different point to the validity of a PPI

I had a ppi done by a party which currently will remain nameless . I am currently in negotiaitons with them about a spot of rust on the wheel arch about 4 inches by 1 inch average. I was bad to miss it and although the car is black, the check came back with no mention of it. I found it after 2 weeks after the first wash (the 993 that is). A bodyshop has told me that this is a known area of weakness (to him at least)!

Certainly I was happy to pay £200 for PPI's on a couple of cars for peace of mind. In my experience the independents around Surrey are very good. I may name names if the party, who missed the rust, does not compensate me for it to be fixed and we go to Court.

Do you know any PP's that missed something serious?

I had a PPI carried out by an independant in Edinburgh who missed a knackered exhaust, engine mounts colapsed and a load of other things which only came to light after I had returned to England and driven the car for a while.

His attitude was that they were not apparent[] and all he was doing was ensuring that nothing was wrong mechanically with it from a major point of view. Since moving back to Edinburgh he has got none of my business and has therefore lost out financially.

Bottom line is that even with a PPI nothing is implied and it is caveat emptor!

Where is this " known area of weakness (to him at least)! " for rust so we can check ours.

Thanks and hope you get sorted.

I took a friend with me, an ex motor trader of 30+ years, he has helped me out with my last few purchases.

He knows nothing about Porsches but he knows an awful lot about abused cars and wear. He is a little down on the mechanical side but he knows a straight car and a well maintained one. Seeing he normally makes his mind up after a 5 min look at the auction I really appreciated his full on attention on the car I purchased ( he left no stone unturned).

I never went down the PPI road as I doubt most could tell you about a good paint job or previous accident as well as a motor trader that does his own paint work could. I could tell it was a looked after car and it ran superb so I went ahead with it.

But on the engine side it was a gamble but the last bills showed the car had a good going over and the sevice history backed up it had been well maintained.

Rust on wheel arches sounds a strange one? any pics, I would be interested to see the problem area.

Sorry to hear about your bad PPI.

Meant to say in my earlier post that I have never heard of rust in the wheel arch for a 993 (fully galvanised body), was an issue with earlier 911's. If there is rust, could be indicitive of previous damage that has been repaired.

I've seen it on the back of the front wheel arch where the body panel turns into the arch and ends. There's a strip of painted metal before the black and I have noticed this edge rusty on some cars I have seen.

Ian.

ian_uk's answer was spot on: on the bottom at back of front wheel arch . Funny enough the well known organisation who did the PPI suggested a strip of rust 4 inches by 1 probably arose after their inspection which was 3 weeks before I found the rust. Seems a good reputation is not worth anything to some of those in North Kent who do PPi's
