who's owned the rarest car?

Following on from the GT2 thread, I was having a play with the "HowManyLeft" site to look at cars I'd owned in the past.

From the rarer ones I've had, there were less than 100 MKII RS2000's, thirty-odd Opel Manta A's, only 7 Matra-Simca Bagheeras and no Clan Crusaders!

e.g. http://howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=bagheera

Was surprised at such low numbers... maybe I've just bought cars that rust away... or maybe I'm just old :-(

Anyone else had some interesting cars which don't exist any more?

I can beat that (just). But the number is incresing, so it won't be long before they catch up.

I just did a DVLA enquiry on my old RS2000, and it is still in existence, albeit SORNed.

A Jowett Javelin (my first boxer engine experience) - not listed like a lot of pre-1963 small volume marques.
Similarly my MGA.

Someone I know had an RS200 Evo thats rare!.

That thing was scary as a day trip with the devil.

Rarest thing I had was a cortina that started on a cold morning and didnt have rust from new.

And pigs might fly.

I dont think the web site can be correct - Many years ago I owned a CLAN CRUSADER - Red WDX 565K.

Take a look at the club web site - http://clanownersclub.com/

I do see the occasional one at multi marque meets - not to sure if I could get in one now[&o]

Think you must be right - maybe the site doesn't cover unusual cars... Mine was a yellow M-reg one - the passenger window would wind itself down when I went up the old concrete sectiion of the A12 just N of Colchester in the 1980's - fortunately the car was narrow enough to reach over and wind it back up whilst still driving.

This could be a one of those 'before my time moments' ive heard of some of these cars but ive never heard of a clan crusader.

Little sports car with Hillman Imp 875cc engine, often kit built.

The Imp engine was very tuneable!

I've seen several around the shows and meetings.

I had a 1976 Lancia Beta HPE (PHK608R) - only 1 and thats SORN!

Well what are the chances of that?

As previosly posted I owned a Clan Crusader.

When the kids came along the sports cars had to go - what did i get in there place

A lancia Beta HPE (High Performance Estate) - just like sitting in the front of sports cars (but of course they had back seats) marvellous engine, pity the metal moth got to Body[:(]

My Dad had an HPE too. Like all Betas, you could sit and watch it rust in front of your eyes.

My Fulvia had a great engine too. Narrow V4 which was a real screamer. No low end torque, but when you kept it buzzing it went, and sounded, great.

We were once on holiday down at Selsy Bill - it was raining and we were eating Fish and Chips in the HPE.

When we had finished I said to my son open his rear window - he duly did this and the whole window fell to the ground[&o]

Fairly rare I guess.....I used to own the most famous of all Shell Sport Celebrity Escort Mexico's ( XNO 272L ). These Mexico's were used as race meeting programme fillers, ie, you would often find a typical 10 lap race featuring works team mechanics pitted against the drivers as a support event during a grand Prix fixture or a similar high profile event during the early to late 70's.
I used to know John Webb through my father ( the then owner of Brands Hatch ) who kept '272L back as was the least damaged and original of the fleet of 18 or so Mexico's, and was actually used as his wedding transport.....I still have the photo's.
I sold the car back in '91 but it does still exist, and is still known within the AVO owners club !

Nostalgia eh !!

Same here! ... parents had a Beta coupe (1974 model) and liked it so much bought an HPE new in 1978 (YEL 779 T) - but it had so much rust after 1 year, they got a refund from the Lancia dealer.

... and no Miura's either on the web site - weird.

Guy who did some bodywork on my HPE showed me reason for rust in my Lancia HPE.

A cross cut of the metal showed it to be like a Cadbury Flake.[8D]

He told me this was due to all different metals not mixing when smelted. He said the Italians had a great deal from the steel they purchased from Russia[]
