Why an 964RS

reading some of the other posts, especially the ones regarding the cup car and and the Cheapish RS, made me wonder why or what made other owners buy there RS.
For me there are several key elements that make the car unique. The first has to be the ride and handling which is so far removed from most main stream modern 911's raw and involving is probably an understatement. The second reason is the noises! you know you are in something different and special from the moment you fire the engine. the third is the looks. It just sits so right, and the inside just says drive me! What made you buy yours. What was THE deciding factor??????
 
For me there were many reasons so I guess I would describe it as the best all round package. There are lots of cars that can compete in individual areas but this is a fantastic package of performance, build quality, looks and value. I think the sub GBP30k price point is also a reasonably affordable and combined with very little depreciation makes it a realistic option for a lot of people. I also love the RS for its focus and driving pleasure on track.

I looked at the Caterham R400 before I bought my RS and it was good until it came to practicality - the fact that I couldn't carry enough stuff for a couple of days away would affect how much use I would get out of it.

There weren't any other contenders except of course other 911 variants.
 
it's the closest thing I could get to my old lowered Beetle - engine in the right place, low with no suspension travel, air cooled, floor mounted pedals, no interior trim, bright colour, good German engineering [:D]

I have always wanted a 964RS (i still have yet to fulfill this dream) since I saw a black one at croft many years ago. At that time I was unaware of them & just thought a 964 was a 964 (i was young [8|] ) , then I saw this 964 in the paddock & it just looked so right, lowered, wheels filling the arches, stripped out interior etc... I fell in love & then realised it was an RS.

So when I'm in a postition to buy one, a 964 RS will sit next to my 2.4S in the garage, just hope by the time this happens the price of an RS has not risen to stupid levels [:D]
 
Laurence - you've summarised it so well. The only things I can add are that I was lucky enough to drive J99 SMO - one of the press cars at the launch of the and at the time owned a pre impact car (911 2.4E). What struck me, aside from the points you mention, was the similarity of the 964 to my E. OK so it had more mass, but the sensations were still there. I'd driven a lot of different 911s at that point (and have driven even more since) and nothing then or now has got as close to the pre impact feel as the 964RS (but then I haven't driven a GT3 of any type).

The 964RS is really the only car that I have regretted selling since the day I sold it (although my Caterham Superlight R was also a car that I didn't want to say goodbye to).
 
Having worked at an OPC in the late 80s/early 90s and the garage owner rallying a selection of 2.7/3.0RS it's not too hard to see why I ended up owning one.

At first I was looking for a clean Carrera 2 but saw a midnight blue RS at the Porsche Clubs Eynsham (?) Hall event a couple of years back and decided thats what I truely wanted. Having cut my teeth on the track with an E30 M3 I decided that I needed something quicker as well. 6 months of searching and I found my car.

I do wonder if people just think its a £13k lhd carrera 2 but I find just cleaning it brings it all the subtle differences home - wheels stamped magnesium, dont lean to hard on the bonnet, a HRW that doesnt work, foglights that arent, rolled arches, rear number plate lights.

Ultimately though the single most satisfying element is the 2 small letters - RS - for everything it stands for.
 
Some interesting points of view so far, most with a common theme. Matt your spot on, it is the nearest thing to a cal bug you can get and has an awful lot to do with why I bought the RS.
 
The starting point for me was that I was bloody old and needed some excitement without getting into trouble, had started doing track days, and had got rid of the kids , and had saved about £30k to put to a replacement for a 4.5 year old 996 daily driver.....replacement being a new 996 of some type.
It dawned on me that 2 Porsche must be better than 1 Porsche . Looked hard at Brian Hunt's 3.2 Clubsport.
Then I saw a couple of red lhd 964RSs for sale at the PCGB National event in Yorkshire summer 2002, talked to some owners in the RS parade area, decided that the 964RS was the one , it had the looks and had 'attitude' and a bit of a reputation. Its a bit agricultural compared to the smooooth 996 that I still run, but definitely exciting [:D]

I popped my GT3 Cherry recently in a MK2, also had many many exciting laps on track as a passenger, my first drive was as I expected (sorry GT3 GUYS!) a mass 911 for rich dentists and accountants (with the odd project manager) no soul, character or involvement..........dare I mention the new BMW M3 as a comparison......[&:] Oh yes quick and so is an AMG 500 SL quicker.......... but where is the spirit...........? Lost for eternity, but we still own a little of that old magic......[:D]

For me it was purely something white that I could park up in garage to gather dust like the rest of the junk I've got.[;)]

Well you could have bought a Tranny Lee!

Personally it was a combination of things. Mainly it was the finest mix of looks, performance, cost available - every year I talk about selling it, every year I look at what else is around and back out!
