Why do I need a new gearbox?

You may be wondering why I am seeking a new 'box for an 80,000 mile car that's been serviced every 6 to 8K miles for its entire life.

Answer, yours truly decided to refresh the gearbox oil since it had done around 40K miles and filled it with Castrol synthetic which wasn't EP (Hypoid) suitable. In political circles I think this is known as "an error of judgement".

This error of judgement destroyed the gearbox internals in 250 miles.

Ouch - that's an expensive mistake Nick [] [:'(]

Might be worth contacting this guy click who seems to be breaking an S2?

That's me from pistonheads - and I was going to reply to this but my gearbox is already sold and is going to someone else on this forum. I've just spent the morning removing it from the car. An interesting experience and I hope it is worth it.

Good look in your search. There is a chap on ebay breaking a low mileage S2 - see item number 4581824265

Thanks for the eBay tip. I will give the person a call.

It *is* an expensive mistake, but I will chalk it up to experience.

Bummer Mate. So what oil did you put in it then? I bet it went really well ...............briefly.

Castrol SMX-S. It did work really nicely until the diff chopped the oil up into something with the lubricative properties of cold tea, and approximately the same viscosity.

I will let you know how things progress....

Thanks for that tip off Phil. I did buy the gearbox from this car after all. It's with Jon Mitchell at the moment.
