Why my speakers sounded terrible..!

Guest

I noticed over the last few years the speakers sounded a bit buzzy and crackly.... well I discovered the reason.... The original Blaupunkts were shot

What sort of speakers are recommended by you guys......?

Cheers...!

Lets see...

... go to OPC, buy at massively inflated price, a set of the same paper coned, foam ringed ,50p a set to make,, items all Porsches seem to come with or buy anything aftermarket for more than £15 a set that will sound 10 times better than when the car left the factory - tough decision.

Apline / Kenwood all respectable. Sony and Pioneer tend to be a bit more bass biased, as are JBL. The JBL range aren't bad value. Try if possible to go for butyl rubber outer rings rather than foam.

Your main concern after getting the correct size for the bolt holes, is making sure the mounting depth is OK - measure the factory ones or the recess.

You could also try a few online places such as ice direct or www.bassjunkies.com - both normally have lots of offers on.

These don't look so bad for the money..(check they fit first!!)

music came out of those!!... ?[:D]

Unbelieveable but yes they made a kind of tinny scratchy type noise and buzzed on deep voices [:D]

Cheers BlackBOX...... plenty to choose from there..... Them Alpines 6x4 are tasty.... Will 6x9 ;s go in the back.....?

When I had my 944 (a few years ago now!) I replaced the door speakers with a set of Dual cone Kenwoods. Fitted perfectly matching all the holes etc. IFRC - they came from Halfords for about £45.
Halford stores used to have a compatibilty chart on display - could be worth a try?
Or even these -(absolutely no affiliation!)

just fitted 4625's all round in my 944. they sound fab but a little bass light however my stereo is so useable you can add just the right amount of bass to bring them up for the warmth needed.

One more question to add, according to this http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faqst.html the rear 4x6" speakers in later cars are fitted on an adaptor plate. If the plate was removed it suggests a 6.5" speaker could be fitted.

Does anybody have any experience of this?

(I'm thinking that if the Alpine 4625s are a little bass light in the front, then a good set of 6.5" speakers in the rear could remedy that.)

covers just slot over the top as per the originals.

If you want to fit the speakers with the panel still on then I doubt you'd get a 6x9 speaker up there. Couldn't see the way to remove the bracket personally but I didn't look that hard either as I didn't know it was an option.

6x4 all round in the '44 and '24, the JBL ones are pretty good as well, but why not just snag another set of Alpines, would give you a balanced sound all round then

150 quid bought me a small Alpine subwoofer which I sit in the boot on velcro whenever I'm on a longer drive. As it is small it sorts out the bass really well without being silly. Installs and removes in about 10 seconds too.

great idea Ian, what with the 24/44/68 being such a short car there's no need for a huge bin in the boot, what size bass bin have you got in yours??

Thats right, the samll speaker is on an adaptor in the rears - which was for the 10 speaker option. Theres about 90mm depth, I am off today to hunt some speakers down, only problem is fitting them, I dont want to take the quarter light out to fit them!

Hi Northern924,

Approximately 28x19x9cm for the whole unit. The wires run through the panels and are hidden under the boot carpet when I'm not using the speaker.

I've got one of these inside the spare wheel, hidden out of the way.
They come up on e-bay now and again. I picked this up for about £20.

Did the original covers fit over them or are you using them 'naked'?!

Got them fitted last Tuesday... What a difference in sound [:D] I dont have the backs sorted out yet..

To answer your question Nick the covers dont exactly go on snug. Id say its down to the actual height of the rim of the speaker itself. If I went in with a dremmel or sommit to make the speaker hole in the door a bit bigger it might work out a bit better....!

You don't have to according to the link in my original post.

Thinking about mine, they should be particularly easy (famous last words) as the vinyl has already come away from the window seal through either sun damage or somebody playing around in there before. I can kill two birds with one stone doing this job; better sound and an opportunity to fix the unsightly vinyl.

I've currently chosen some Pioneer 6.5" components for the rear as I want a better bass source than the 4x6"s and don't want coaxials in the back (not keen on high frequencies coming from behind/surrounding me, I prefer the sound stage arranged in front of me).

I think I'm going to go for the Alpines in the front though as per the OP.

Of course I'll need a new headunit that fits my interior more suitably too....

Cheers for the tips on a sub, might have a look at that soon (another thing added to the already growing list LOL)
