Why the huge price variations?

Hi all,

I currently own a 996 and loooking to move to a 997. When I look at the prices for a 2008 model for example, prices can vary from £26k - £38k without an obvious reason to me.


Of course I understand that service history, mileage, engine size and optional extras play a major part in valuations but most seem to have a FSH with reasonable options.

I would guess it's really about, 'something is only worth what your prepared to pay for it', and like most things with the magic word printed on it, sellers ask whatever they think they can get away with. So when looking for any car, always keep a clear head and stick to your guns, as you already have a 996 the world of Porsche is no stranger to you, and you can be more confident in what you are looking at and not fall into the pit traps. So go stand in front of some and base your value on the real value of what you think, I looked at lots, all with pros and cons (as they are old cars now). Don't get blinded by the talks and forums regarding IMS and bearing issues. When a good car presents itself at the right price you'll its an easy decision to make, but finding the one is tricky:) I'm aware this sounds like skirting the question but there really isn't a straight forward answer.
 
Have a look at their MOT history online then ask for the service history - a lot of the reasons for the price differences will be present there, without even having to look at the cars.

While there isn’t a linear relationship between price and condition/desirability it won’t be far off.


When I bought a Cayenne S last year, I set up a spreadsheet of all the available cars I wanted online. I saw 5/6. The ones at the very bottom end were on paper great. In reality awful. Scratches, dents, wear and tear, missing paperwork, dead batteries etc.
The one I ended up buying was cheap because it had no interest, as they didn’t advertise any of the extras it came with (fully loaded), missing stamps in the book (they forgot to have it stamped at the OPC - I got it stamped after I bought it). So there are bargains to be had.
 
Thanks very much for your replies chaps. I’ve seen a nice 2007 (June) Carerra 4 down in Cornwall that seems to have good history etc. Price seems a bit keen at more than £25k as it’s obviously not the S model and doesn’t have a load of optional extras but it is a manual gearbox.

One question... if it’s a June 2007 model, does that make it the same engine as the 2004/2005 model? If so, does that mean that it has the same IMS issues as the 996?
