Why we love these cars !

Hi All

Took the 993 for a blast round the Peak District last weekend to blow away the winter cobwebs. Really reminded me why I bought this car and why, after 3 years, I can't think of a replacement. Despite tourist traffic, wet roads and slush, the drive was truly memorable with the car feeling fantastic pootling along or (very occasionally [;)]) reaching for the rev limiter.

In case anyone's interested the (carefully planned) route took in the A515 from the A50 through Ashbourne to Buxton, then the A537 to Macclesfield (the renowned Cat & Fiddle Road) and back again [:D] and various other A & B roads around the Peaks. After all that, even the M1 slog back home felt good - "I thought the speedo was in kilometres officer" [;)].

Can't wait for the next chance to get out there ant use the car as it was meant to be used [8D].

Ahh, the A515. I know that road like the back of my hand - a superb drive if you get a clear run. I've not had my 944 for about four weeks now since it's been in the bodyshop after getting a light shunt up the derriere and i'm missing it. The good news is I should be getting it back either tomorrow or Saturday and your note has got me all nostalgic for that route so I might just take the car up that way for a blast to get familiarised with the car again. Four weeks in a Merc C class (as nice a car as it is) hire car has really dulled my driving senses!

Hi Scott

I see your post says you're in Derby. Fantastic driving roads on your doorstep you lucky #$£$%^ [;)].

It's a bit of a trek for me from Milton Keynes but well worth it.

What do you think of the Cat & Fiddle road ? I hear bikers like to kill themselves on it in the good weather. None on Sunday - probably too wet & cold !

As you can see there was a bit of snow around on Sunday. We never get any in MK so a bit of a novelty for me [:)].

Hi Ravi

Best mate of mine lives in Buckingham and I quite often end up in Milton Keynes although I often get lost on the roundabouts [;)] , may see you around in the summer

All the best
Chris

Hi Chris

There are some good roads between MK, Buckingham and Aylesbury. Relatively quiet too depending on the time of day.

Only problem is that most have been well used so not the smoothest ride in a 993 []. Took mine for a cross-country blast yesterday and I swear my internal organs were re-arranged by some of the B-roads [X(].

Actually MK itself is Porsche heaven. National speed limits (60 & 70) on the (mostly) smooth grid roads in town [:D] and the roundabouts are a real handling challenge. The fun is in creating any number of DIY circuits within the grid [:)]. Three figure speeds are a real possibility - kilometres obviously officer [;)].

If you're here in the summer, drop me a note via the forum and we can arrange a meet nearby and check out the local roads. Despite the above, I am actually a calm and sane driver [:D].

Cheers,

Ravi

Must admit to really enjoying that part of the world ( But being a Northerner Ill whisper that [:D] )

Will take you upon the offer of a meet the next time Im down , will be nice to meet up with a 993 owner

All the best
Chris

Don't forget - it's not only 993s in Milton Keynes!!! We've got a pretty good Porsche population covering the whole range.

Best regards

Dave

I actually come from the Macclesfield/Stockport area before I moved to Deby and the country roads out that way are superb. The Cat & Fiddle road is definately oneof the best but is very dangerous and its reputation is deserved. I've not tackled it for years (and not in my Porsche) but I have got a few mates who have dabbled with motorbikes in their time who have all had incidents of varying degrees of seriousness on that road (though thankfully all have survived to tell their tales) so it needs to be tackled with respect no matter what type of vehicle your in, but in terms of driving roads there are better in the area. One that springs to mind is the road out of Buxton over the top of the Goyt valley that drops down into Whaley Bridge (the A number escapes me) is also a fantastic road with lots of sweeping constant radius bends and babies-bum smooth tarmac which could easily be linked up with the Cat&Fiddle road to make up a fantastic circular route. It was a favourite of mine in my cycling days and you could easily top 60mph on a bike on the drop into Whaley Bridge.

Unfortunately alot of the roads closer to Derby have been infected by that speed camera virus that is sweeping the nation which only succeeds to break your journey up into a series of sprints rather than allowing it to be a nice flowing journey - thats where a turbo comes in handy!!

Hi Scott

I think you mean the A5004 between Buxton & Whaley Bridge. I remember a run over that road a few years ago in (whisper it !) a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo which was a great car if the road was smooth [:D].

I agree with you re the key to an event free trip over the Cat & Fiddle - smoothness, restraint and a lot of respect for the road !

Re the speed cameras, I think there's still fun to be had on our A & B roads if we go searching for it [;)].
