Why?

Hi all, I need to know why I should buy a 993 over 996. I did have a 3.2 Carrera and am now in the market for another porsche. Are their any good reasons for one over the other? Please try and convince me.( I will ask the same on the 996 page!!)
Thanks
Colin

Just stand and look at a 993 - that's all it takes - and there is so much more!!

Just drive each of them, then you will know which is for you.

Applies whichever you decide is the car for you. They are completely different cars.

You will not be sitting on fence after the drives.

Summary is:
If you want a modern car that is easy to drive with your brain switched off get a 996
If you want the looks and the drive of your life, but don't need to commute in slow traffic every day, get a 993

Read below for declaration of bias (but it is bias found by doing above tests)

993 of course, but quite honestly any air-cooled knocks the "˜laters' into a c0cked hat![:D]

preferably with no syncromesh on any gears[:D]

If you like driving your 3.2 then stick to the 993. I went from a 3.2 to a 993 and to be honest I preferred the 3.2 to drive. The 993 is a lot quieter and the steering is a lot easier. Though it's faster than the 3.2 though it doesn't feel like it, there's nothing quite so convincing that you're going fast than a 3.2 engine letting rip just behind your ear. I've not driven a 996, but I think I'd be disappointed.

Years ago I remember getting ever so confused about the various type 911. Spent ages working out what was what and why, and the quintessential differences. On eventually recognising the separations, & when Porsche announced they were no longer making air-cooled engines and once I had recovered from my gasp of
"NNNNNNNnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooo"!
"¦which woke the open plan office up, I decided that no other 911 would do. The 993 is the most beautiful, characteristic & otherwise distinctive 911, the culmination of years of evolution against odds and conservative manufacture of expense. You'll get your pennies worth with the 993, she'll demand your attention and respect and in return she'll give you all this and more"¦ Ever rewarding experience assured with every drive.

I also went from 996 to 993 and funnily enough I was advised to go for a 996 because of my driving habits of the time (50 miles a day). I have only had my 993 for a month or two now but the REAL difference between the two is that I always look forward to getting into my c4s and 'driving' it. Hard to explain but each trip is slightly different and you do learn new stuff each time. The 996 I had was a great car, especially with a sports exhaust, but, in retrospect, it did feel a little too easy to drive fast and you do become a little blasé about that. The end product is points on your license but still the habit of 'gunning it' as that is the main experience in the 996 - pace.

If you are not doing a long commute and not in stop/start traffic the 993 wins hands down as an 'experience' and I wouldn't go back to a 996 and would probably only just consider a 997 now PDK is out (but again, I suspect speed will the the main experience rather than full driving!)...
