Wider wheels

Rumor has it the 964 Turbo (965 if you will) wheels fit the narrow bodied 964 cars, but how far can you push the offset?

Wheels of the following size are up for grabs. Ignoring the fact that they are only 17" do you think they would fit a C4?

9×17" (front) ET35
10.5×17" (rear) ET31

Chris,

This is the trouble with rumours.... they very often get converted into Old Wives Tales!!!

The standard wheels on a 964 - C2 or C4 - came with an offset of 52.3mm front and rear. The 17" Cup wheels were ET55, again front and rear, for both C2/C4 and Turbo. Only the Turbo 3.6 differed slightly in having ET52 (F) and ET61 (R).

The offsets you are quoting are, I suspect, designed for the earlier non-ABS cars as they are far too shallow an offset to fit on a 964 (or a Turbo). Short of carving out a big chunk from the rear of the wheel mounting face (I'm joking!!) there is no solution I'm afraid. A non-starter.

No probs Dave, Thanks fo the quick reply though! The wheels werent a Porsche fitment, so I thought I was in for trouble!

Just to check though, would standard 964 turbo wheels fit (3 piece split rims)?

Cheers
Chris

Chris,

Without reference to the numbers it's impossible to say what a "standard" Turbo wheel is. If they are wheels from a 3.3 Turbo then yes, since they are pretty much the same offset as used on the C2/4. The Turbo 3.6 used rear wheels with a larger offset (ET61 compared to ET55 of the 3.3) and you would need some 7mm spacers for those.

The only 3 piece split rims that were standard on any 964 Turbo were the 18" "Speedline for Porsche" rims fitted to the 3.6 Turbo - and they were ET52 (F) and ET61 (R). Any other 3 piece split rims you come across are not original fitment and could be anything. Checking the ET from the casting (or measuring it) is the only way to be sure.

Regards

Dave
