Could some one with 986 please confirm the overall width from outside edge of wing mirror to the other .I have a 987 and it is 2010 .The reason some one wants to buy a Boxster and mine will not go through the garage opening so i thought the 986 would be smaller ,also in the 987 you cannot fold the mirrors in they just spring back does the 986 do the same .
Thanks in advance
Brian

the mirrors do bend in ( and outward as i found out reversing it into my very tight car parking at home hedge) as for width go on auto trader should be on there :)

Try the driver's manual, it tells you the width and how to lock the mirrors folded on the 987, the 986 I'm not sure if the mirrors do fold and lock.

From getting a 987 into my 1970-built garage, a 986 is only marginally narrower than a 987 over the mirrors - which do not fold. Certainly less than 2".

Not sure about the 986 dimensions but as regards the 987 wing mirrors they DO fold in and STAY folded, otherwise I'd have a big issue with my garage too. Push them back towards the window and there is a little lever with a yellow end cap inside the bit that you have just opened up. You use this lever to hold them in this folded position - to open them up you just push towards the window, the stay springs back and you can allow the mirror to return to its open position. I was looking for a 986 when I bought the 987, my garage is really tight for space but I still got the later model in with the mirrors folded. You will need to pad the side of the wall on the drivers side and have the window glass down to enter/exit more comfortably thats all. Hope this helps.

986 mirrors fold just like 987. Push them back and engage the clip underneath to hold them in folded position. Instructions are in the driver's handbook.

The overall width of a 986 Boxster is 1780mm and as posted previously, yes - the mirrors do fold in. (Although to be honest, it doesn't make that much difference).

See the things you learn on this forum...yes the mirrors Do fold in, did not see the wee clip ..to be honest never had to fold then in as my garage doors are huge you could drive a bus through. Thanks once again
Brian

Interesting that they fold - do you feel confident though that the mechanism is happy with repeated/regular folding?

I have had the 987 for 3 years & fold the mirrors every time I put it away. OK its a second car so that's not daily but no issues so far. I also have had carbon fibre replacements to the plastic mirror base fitted (Matching the side intakes which are also now CF) - and ohhhhhh yes, it sure does make a difference as far as my tight modern garage is concerned, mainly when reversing out though! How come with all the planning laws we have builders can make garages fit only for housing a roller skate?

PS the mirrors outlasted the factory fit N/S/F condenser replaced after it was just 4 years old so probably the least of anyones worries. When will they sort that flaw out? I have fitted grilles to the intakes but.........

yep[:D]

ive folded them in approx 2-300 times since i bought it .works fine evry time-not as good as my wifes BMW mirrors though[]

If the garage door is an up and over with a central key lock and the two side plates to act as stops, one way of increasing width is to fit an electric door. They are fully insulated to reduce any condensation and also fit tight to the floor to lessen dust, in fact have a perfect seal all round. Other benefits include increased length, greater security and if wet no need to get out of car. Had one fitted a couple of years ago and no longer need to rub down paint and repaint every couple of years due to location near sea and salt laden rain!! Should cost £800-£1000.

Your friend probably needs to try a dealer and on the test drive to see if it fits. Note the turning circle of 986/987 is fairly large as well. The narrow body pre 1997 911s are much smaller than a boxster in width.
