Wierd smoke incident

A coup,e of days ago I drove down to my brothers place in Kent, about 85 miles of mainly motorway driving. As I drew up outside my brothers house, all of a sudden a thick dark smoke poured out of the centre air vents and competely filled the cabin. I quickly switched off the ignition and opened the windows to let the smoke out.

The smoke diudn't smell of oil, but had a slight metallic/ozone tinge to it - as though something electrical had gone worng. But I turned on all the electric bits and everything is working fine.

So what could have caused it? Anyone got any bright ideas? Nothing has happend since and I've covered another 400 miles since then...

Cheers

Thanks Maurice.

Not sure it is that though, as there does seem to be some whirring going on behind the dash which I assume is that fan. It is only a feint noise - I guess it should not be too instrusive normally?

Cheers

Sounds like it could possibly be a seized fan on the CCU (AC / Heater control unit) .. fairly easy to check, just drop the unit out like a radio, fan is visible .. or you can check for it running by listening at the vent in the front panel after turning the engine off. It should run on for a while ..

cheers, Maurice [:D]

So a seized CCU sensor fan would cause the 993's excellent climate control to think the driver needs a good kippering?[;)]

Could be one of the fans behind the pollen filters burning out? Does the fan blow as hard as it used to?

Seems to be just as effective as before. It's all a bit straqnge. I'll have a closer look when I have some time at the weekend.

Maybe it wasn't the fan burning out but the brush contact in the fan frying some grease? I notice you are in Caversham, if you are going to look at the fan unit then pollen filters from Eurocarparts are about £12 to replace, I don't think mine had ever been done judging by the state of them. They are based in Cardiff Road.
