Wilhemy soft top gadget - question

It's top-down weather again, hurrah!! Unfortunately my first attempt at dropping the top this year took some of the smile from my face. I've got the Wilhemy unit installed and it should allow me to drop the top in a single button press but this no longer seems to be working properly. When I go for the single button press operation the process stops after the rear cover gets raised a few inches; same situation for both up and down. This seems to be the point which must be reached before the car has decided which direction the roof is going in; when I put the original unit back in this seems to be the point before which you can't reverse what you're doing. Once it reaches this point then you can reverse the direction (or maybe my mechanism is acting up - I've had the motor replaced in the past because the sensors detecting direction of travel were buggered).
Anyway, has anyone had similar problems with the Wilhemy unit? or can anyone shed some light on why it stops at this particular point - I have been able to drop the top with the single button press operation on the 2nd attempt after it stops but I have to keep my finger on the button completely to get the hood to come back up.

John,
Sorry to read about your problem. I have used the Wilhemy unit for 5 years now with no problems. Does the mechanism work correctly when the Porsche item is installed? I was not sure by your description. If it works as it should then your Wilhemy unit must be faulty.

When opening the hood with the Wilhelm unit installed it may be that you are not pressing the switch in the "close" direction for long enough (3 seconds) before you touch the "open" direction and thus the mechanism stops when you take your finger off the switch... as it will if you do not hold the switch long enough in the "close" position. The same applies when closing the hood but you must hold the switch in the "open" position for 3 seconds before quickly pressing the switch in the "closed" position.

Hope its not your motor micro-switches playing up!

Iain, had mine now for over 3 years with no issues; when I put the original unit back in it appears to work ok, although, as I mentioned above, I can't reverse the direction of travel until that '3 inch' point of the rear lid has been reached, this is with either the original or the Wilhemy unit. I'm not sure if this is normal - once beyond this point, going up or down, I can reverse the direction. The Wilhemy is doing everything else right, it's just the single button push that's an issue - I'm definitely pressing the opposite button for over the required 3 seconds - there's just some sort of switch kicking in after a couple of seconds that causes the whole thing to halt in its tracks. I suspect it probably is an issue with the motor's micro-switches, which will be the 2nd time for me - had the whole motor unit replaced under warranty about 2 years ago.

John,
I have just been out checking the way the hood mechanism works on my car and I can reverse the direction of travel at any time and not just after the "3 inch" point as with you. So, it looks like it's not the Wilhemy unit that's at fault but a microswitch fault within the motor.

thanks for that, I suspected as much; so it's off to the OPC (with original unit refitted) to see if my extended warranty will cover a 2nd soft-top motor. I think I can guess what the answer will be :(
