Will Golf MkII interior light fit to 944?

Hi,

I've been thinking about fitting the time delay Mk II Golf interior light (the one just above the rear view mirror) into my 86 turbo. The exterior lens part looks the same, but there's an extended part that I guess houses the delay circuit on the Golf light. Tonight I pulled the light from my car and there seems to be space behind the trim to take the extended section.

Before I buy a light can any one confirm if it will fit?

Regards

I have heard of this before, but its a vague recollection. Was there a delayed Mk1 lamp? Its the same as a Mk1 Golf lamp, but I presume that the Mk2 part is dimensionally similar.

Paul,

I did it and regretted it. There is not enough room in the top rail area to do a proper job, and I was afraid of shorting something and burning the car.

The better way is a remote delay relay under the dash which holds the power to the lamp after the door switch goes open circuit.

But there was a like for like part with a delay pcb attached and a direct fit to the VW aperture.

Because Id read about it on a forum, thought that it sounded like a good idea but then forgotten about it. I wondered if it was your post/thread that I was remembering.

Its possible I posted it at the time, then went quiet when it worried me a few weeks later [>:]

Interior light delay is a nice feature and given the lamp / holder match up its a pity there is so little room behind

It could have been me who posted this idea before as I know I thought about it and investigated it a little. However, from memory, it does indeed fail due to the fact that there isn't enough space behind the light bracket to accommodate the light delay gubbins.

You could try removing the delay circuit from the light and mounting it remotely, but that would be a pain. It would probably be easier to build your own circuit and mount it behind the headlining.

I replaced the interior light on my S2 with a time delay one from a Mk2 Golf GTI and other than having to have the switch on the opposite side and join a few cables it was simple and as the lighting circuit is in series all the lights in the car were delayed so front and boot light both time delayed cost about £4 from a scrapyard.

Is the answer: fit it into the boot carpet and itll fit safely and make both lamps work?

I fitted mine in the front like I said it fit with no shorting issues but you do have to make up a short connection for the Golf light as it has from memory 3 connections and the Porsche only has two cables but I just made a short cable up to connect two of the terminals which were common so the standard wiring fits. Actually when you turn the unit around so the switch is on the passenger side so the unit fits in the hole, the light is easier to use as the switch is no longer hidden under the drivers sun visor. Easy to do and if you don't like it you can refit the old one without any problem as none of the original wiring is cut. I wish I had taken some photos when I did it.
