Will Rising Road Tax Gradually Make 987 3.4 Gen 1 More Difficult To Sell

The way the road fund licence fee is going, the road tax for Gen 1 Boxster S 3.4 will hit £600 pa in 3 years time. Road tax went up £5 pa a couple of years ago, then £10 pa and now it’s been £20 pa for the last two years. So at this rate, the tax will go from £540 now to £600 in 3 years time.

Although these cars seem to shift regularly at around £12-£16k, I do wonder whether people will eventually question the merit of paying £600 a year to run a £12k motor, even before the bore score stories put them off.

I guess it can be compensated by a price adjustment, but with 3.2L 987s selling for £10-£12k and the price of Gen 2 3.4s coming down towards the £20k mark, I could see the values of these particular cars coming under pressure.

Am I being paranoid ?

Your forgetting that certain years of gen 1 cars like 2007 have been the best part of £600 for 4/5 years due to CO2 levels which has had no impact on them.

If new owners are like me they will have no idea how much the tax is until it's too late, haha, got a bit of a shock!!!!

Cant see it being a problem

If someone wants a sports car for 12k then the Road Tax should not effect them
You can pay monthly and 50 a month is not a problem when you look a fuel costs

Just been in the same boat, ouch was a bit of a shock it's more than our other cars added together.

But as also said at the end of the day for running a sports car it's not so bad, not sure it will have any effect long term on saleability certainly not compared against the risk of going pop.

Thanks for your comments. I guess to an extent I didn’t really think about the road tax either when I bought it. Couldn’t afford a Gen 2 and was trying to avoid early Gen 1 IMS risk (which at the time seemed to be the big isue of the day) which is why I bought the 3.4 with the bigger bearing. As you say, just part of the cost of running a sports car.

Just sold our gen 1 3.4S
road tax was definately a factor ; i hated paying it for a low use car on principle
not affordability.

Have to agree that is the main reason I sold my previous 2007 987S after only 16 months ownership. At that time it was £460 pa but hated paying it. After a blip with an Octavia VRS for 2 years went back to a gen 2 987S & RFL was under £300. Now have a 718 with PDK & RFL only £180 - happy days?? & an Octavia VRS DSG as a daily driver!
