I have a 1990 944 s2,

I am thinking of buying:
Front wheels are 8.5 x18 H2 ET 52, rears are 10 x18 H2 ET 47

any advice please? i know 17" is better for handling etc but in terms of offset and width will they go on ok?

The fronts will be fine but you may struggle with the rears. Some Turbos have these sizes on the rears but an S2 does not have rolled arch lips like a Turbo so you have less space to play with.

The standard S2 rear is 8" with an offset of 52, if you enter those details and the new wheels into http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp you'll see that they stick out an extra 30mm.

Check both sides with your current setup to see if you have an extra 30mm of space
