Wilwood Calipers...

Has anyone fitted Wilwood calipers onto a a series one car on this board? Id be interested to hear about the afdapters that they used and particularly interested to hear how the unsealed calipers are holding up?

Simon

have you looked at the rennbay kit?

I think Steve Bassington (owner of the Orange sprint 924 turbo I linked to a few days ago has them)

I saw them yes, thats whats got me thinking about them again. It seems expensive though if thats the kit that Ive seen recently for $750 for four piston callipers. because I can buy the callipers on their own for about $125 each. Im considering buying a pair and having adapters made up by Ian Godney at Godspeed.

I forget why now, but for a long time Wilwood has been on my "bargepole" list. It was based on the personal experience of a mate I just don't remember the details.

Maybe he used EBC pads, or Pirelli P6000 tyres? [:D] In my personal opinion, theyre not quite as good as Brembos with similar piston sizes (and under clamping load they flex a little), but theyre better than most 951/964 Brembo callipers are now... You couldnt rebuild a Brembo caliper for what the Wilwoods could be had for (up until recently, of course) from America, too.

Yes, that's it; they flexed. Quite a lot.

Cheap as opposed to inexpensive.

Another thought - do they supply OE calipers to any manufacturer? If not, why not?

I have had a set fitted to my 2.7 Lux for over a year now, big improvement over the standard callipers, had no problems with them, well made and easy pad change.

Another issue with Wilwoods was that the early ones had no dust deals, as does some of the current range & in the UK with dirty roads & salt they seize pistons. Also one of the sellers in the UK had a less than stellar reputation for service which didn't help.

Did you buy a ready to go kit Jon, or did you have the adapters made yourself?

Do you know which model callipers youre running, and: if theyre unsealed, how are they holding up?

Yep, Harley-Davidson.
The Rennbay kit uses the dust-shielded piston version.
Advantages for me: easy to change pads for trackdays, definite improvement over floating caliper original, reduction in unsprung weight
Disadvantages, aforementioned flex when compared to Brembos, more restricted pad choice, the bleed nipples are dinky and unprotected. TBH these are my biggest issue with them.

Oh my God! That might actually be worse than nobody using them - the well-known performance icon that is HD. I suppose there's a lot of bike to stop, but it isn't going to be going very fast.

I have a pair of new ATE calipers and they must weigh 15 kilogrammes between them, with pads fitted!

Hi Simon

I had Promax motorsport fit one of there big brake kits for me, however the supplied adaptor brackets needed extra machining to fit correctly on my car, the callipers do use dust-shielded pistons, as for them flexing I have never had any problems. They are very light and a good upgrade compared to the original floating callipers. I use type A pads (fast road / track) plenty of feel without needing to much warming up to work well and very little squeal.

Have a word with Andy at Promax he can tell you if they will fit on your car, and if they will suit your requirements.

Somehow I can't see Simon doing that...

Why?

Hi Jon,

Fen's making a reference to the old days when it was open season on various forums between some people. Those days are long gone, and although there are always differences between posters here they no longer feel the need to bring the tone down or start personal arguments. That's all available on Pistonheads, if you want it! [&:]

It's good to see that, even if members of this forum don't like or agree with other's opinions they keep it civil. That way we hardly never seem to have the need to moderate, everyone's happy and I can enjoy my glass of wine in peace. [8D]

Hi Simon,

Yep, and you've been notified why!

Please see my post above, I'm not going to allow pointless comments on here about whether you do or don't like someone else. We get enough grief about this forum being open to non-members as it is, without that sort of thing. Please take it somewhere else if you want to have a go at someone?

Thanks
