Wind deflector for Cabriolet

Recently had a drive in a Boxter with a (genuine) wind deflector which seemed to work well and I'm interested in one for the 993 Cab.
There seem to be quite a few aftermarket mesh type ones and one genuine one - 993 561 979 01 to '95 (ditto 03 '96 on). They all remain in place hood up or down.
Also some references to a genuine one(?) which goes up with the hood when this is raised.
Can anyone help with details of this "moving" type?
Also, any general comments on how effective deflectors are for a 993.
Thanks.

hi,

I've got what I think is the standard 993 cab wind deflector.

It doesn't move by itself - but you can leave it fitted in your car - with hood up or down, and then you just have to raise or lower the wind deflector if you want it up / down.

Pretty easy to remove it ( no tools, just release button - but would use up fair bit of boot space to store it in there.
The only fiddly bit is that the deflector has a flappy skirt ( best way I can describe it ) - well an 'apron' - that sits horizontally to - and zips into your hood - once you've zipped it in - you only need to unzip it if you want to take the deflector out of the car.
Its just a nasty small sized zip that feels like it is straining - might just be mine is old and gummed up.
Seems to work pretty well reducing wind buffeting etc., but it does take up a bit of headroom when you raise the roof.

Hi

The genuine Porsche wind deflector for the 993 zips into your hoods headlining (if you look at the headlining you will see a zip assembly) The pivot points are slotted into 2 brackets located one on each side of the hood uprights.

When the hood is up - the wind deflector forms part of the headlining and when you put the hood down the wind deflector automatically deploys - please note you cannot have passengers in the back when fitted.

See pic of the exploded parts diagram for the wind deflector - which shows the wind deflector in full. I don't believe you can purchase them from OPC now - however Gert at Carnewal still has them - P93 wind deflector in upgrades section on his website - price 350 US dollars.

Makes a huge difference to driving with the hood down - no more wind buffeting and far quieter also.

I'll try posting a pic of it deployed and stowed - but only allowed one pic per post apparently.

Hope that helps

there are a number of aftermarket ones, worth checking with OPC as they will go in and out of stock and you will know it fits etc. Dont forget your PCGB 10% discount

Belated thanks gents, particularly guest A Ward for nice pics.

Is the "flappy skirt" oxford_hippo refers to an essential aerodynamic part of the deflector? If not, could it be furled up out of the way avoid problems with the zip?

We seldom use the rear seats (just for grandchildren!) but then would need to remove the deflector and leave it at home.

If caught out by rain just 2 up and using the deflector, I assume we could remove it and leave it on the back seat.

More research by me is needed.

I've had a prowl on the 993 forum and think we should give a hearty 3 cheers to Maurice for his spot on posts - the one on aftermarket litronics particularly good. Much better than any Haynes manual, even if there was one for the 993. And obviously covering aftermarket items which will not be found in the official w/s manual.

Thanks again.

Hi Timber
The 'flappy skirt' is a key part of the set-up, as it closes off the rear seat compartment so ( largely ) stops the wind buffeting in that way ( also helps stop your things on the back seat flying out... ).

The zip ( apologies if I've caused un-due alarm ) is just used when you fit the deflector - so with it raised up or down the zip can stay fitted.

It does fit into the luggage compartment - I think the deflector case ( frabric canvas/cotton type bag ) has so particularly placed Velcro designed to fix to Velcro in the luggage space.

Other thin not sure if anyone has mentioned - with the roof 'open' then you can choose if you want the deflector standing up to stop the wind, or laid back flat if you prefer.
