Wind deflector mounting brackets

I am looking into installing a wind deflector for my 986, but I don't see how the mounting brackets get attached to the rollover hoops. I haven't yet bought the brackets nor the deflector until I'm sure I can install one. Can anybody point me to a guide as to how to do it?

Thanks,
Paul

They attach with a pop-rivet in a hole in each roll hoop. The rivets are included in the mounting kit.

You should pull the roll bar padding and see if you have the holes. Some cars do and some don't. Then you have to drill them.

Can't sleep Jeff? Hope the fires are nowhere near you []

I've often wondered. Given that the steel used for the roll-over bars is not standard mild-steel (it's aparrently tougher for the extra protection), are there any problems with drilling for these brackets?

Cool. I'll have a look at lunchtime, and get back to you. Is there something for the bottom of the deflector to clip onto ?

Yes, it is another "bracket" that is attached to the back of the roll bar padding.
The wind deflector is placed against this (and between this and the rollbar) and then clipped in to the top brackets from behind.

No doubt TP has a picture of that too [:D]

OK, I can get the padding to move a little on the passenger side, enough to see that I do have holes underneath for the mounting bracket. I cannot get the padding on the front of the rollover bar to move at all on the drivers side, so there must be a trick to this I am missing? Help?

It is held on by plastic sleeves that are wound on to threads protuding from the padding.

You can get a flat blade (paint scraper would do), wrap tape around the blade to protect the paint on the rollbar, and just insert between rollbar and padding and lever off (a bit at a time - taking turns between sides).
The slevees might stay in the holes, or might come out with the padding. No problem - just push them back in to the holes in the rollbar if necessary, and push the padding back on.

HOWEVER. You don't need to remove the padding at this point... Fixing the "bracket" to the padding would be no trouble at all when you get the parts. A lot easier than the other brackets on the rollbar!

Nice one Mark, I'll put this in the file of "how to" for when I get the deflector. Off to ebay .....

This is the middle bracket. As Mark said it goes on the back of the middle roll bar padding. 2 pop rivets for that one. The middle padding has a metal backing plate that you pop-rivet the middle bracket to.

You are lucky that there is a hole for the pop-rivet already drilled in each roll hoop. That metal is made of boron and people who have had to drill the holes said it is one tough metal.

I am in Northern California - San Francisco area. The fires are in Southern California - Los Angeles area.

Ok, finally got around to fitting the deflector this weekend. It was dead simple due to all the posts above.

Thanks all,
P
