Wind deflector

I'm looking for a wind deflector for my 2001 Boxster. Not keen to pay OPC full price if I can avoid it. Been looking on e-bay and although they appear to come with glass panel and bag I'm not sure about all the necessary fittings. My car already has the headrest inserts but only a storage net not the storage box behind the seats on top of the engine compartment ,as offered as an option on 2003 models. I know that there are two clips integral to the glass panel. I presume that when the levers are snapped down they apply outward pressure to hold the thing in place. But the instruction manual refers to a lower fixture/clip fixing on the rollover bar between the head rests.
Any advice /guidance would be welcome before I get into making bids.
Thanks.

Steve

You would need the attachments on the roll bar (each side) and another attached to the back of the trim pad at the lower part of the roll bar. Some drilling of the roll bar would be required
(for the side fixings) and this IS rather harder material than standard steel I understand. Check the ones on eBay are complete (although you could no0doubt buy the fixings form your local Porsche dealer).
You would have to wonder why anyone was selling only part of the system on eBay...

Just trawling around ebay.co.uk and I found the very thing you're looking for - going for a princely £77 at the moment (though the picture's upside down !). However, you need to get your skates on if you're interested as the auction closes at 21:00 tomorrow (1st).

Item code is 2488053512 - using this you can get to it directly from the search bar.

Best of Luck !!

P.S. - nothing to do with me honest [;)] - some fella down in Bristol.

Many thanks for the advice Mark and Darren. I too am a bit curious why anyone would sell this bit separately unless the part has been separated from the car (and original owner) without them knowing! I would be a bit nervous about taking a drill to my pride and joy though!
Might be safer to buy new and get my local OPC to do it properly.
Need to go rattle the piggy bank again I guess!

You know about the little clips at the top of the sides yes?

Well on ONE side just gently push the clip towards the middle - JUST A LITTLE (it more bends than anything, so don't force it)
At the same time push down slightly on the deflector on the same side, and ease the deflector back - this unlatches the clip from that side. Do the same for the other side, and remove the deflector towards the rear.

To refit you do pretty much the same.
Place in from the rear, engace the bottom first (you will see how it goes ehen you have it out).
Then push doen and forward to latch each side in turn (no need to play with the clip latches this time.

If it is in correctly, it will not rattle. if you've got squeaking or other noices then it might be worth running a damp cloth over the mating faces to make sure they are clean.

The only time my deflector has rattled to any degree was top-down at 150. And then it was more that it was vibrating from the wind from behind, rather than moving in the mountings.

Thanks for that... I did have a little look at removing it, but as you say, it seems to bend more than move, and I wasnt sure what direction to take it out in!.. Its only moving a little bit, but its making a high pitched rattle/squeak which is annoying, even with the roof up!... I think giving it a clean and re-assembling it should sort it, but if not I might put a small strip of black electrical tape along the edge to "pad it out" a bit!..

Thanks again, I will have a go at fixing this tonight

It's easier to show than write how to do it.

Here's what the manual says:

...assuming this stopped you from hitting the max 164mph Mark? [;)]

Nope, chickened out.
150mph on a rare clear stretch of Autobahn, unexpected and so top-down, with just the normal seatbelts (when we had the 6 points available), and I had not checked the tyres for damage.

Cluck-cluck-cluck...

What happens when one hits the electronic speed limitation? Especially if you are downhill and have still got plenty of momentum...

I don't think there is a speed restriction - this isn't a Merc, Audi, or BMW.
The only restrictions are the Rev limit, and the air resistance/drag and rolling resistance of the tyres.

So downhill should allow higher than stated top speed, unless that happens to be exactly the point of max RPM...?

Ah, so it is not true that certain governing body in some countries (including UK) require various electronic speed restriction depending on the car model?

I need to find myself this thing you call autobahn which would led to the Nurnbergring.[8D]

Thanks again for the responses guys. I managed to get the screen out last night and found out what was wrong (although havent fixed it yet). The foam pad off the underside of the trim strip is missing on the passenger side, and so the screen is able to vibrate up and down. The plastic clip isnt kept under tension so is also rattling! I will be investing in a bit of black draft-excluder to sort this problem out asap!!..

ps.. When I mentioned electrical tape in an earlier post, I was under the impression the screen came out of the black rubber trim strip, and this is the interface which was rattling...

There is a retrofit kit that has all the parts. If your car already had the holes drilled in the roll bar for the mounting clips then all you need is a pop-rivet gun.

Hi Brian,

Look at
http://boxsters.addr.com/windstop_repair.htm

The parts come as a kit.
The bottom one is pop-riveted to the rear of the padding on the rollbar.

The parts needed are in

Hello, just bought a 2.7l 05 987, but it didn't come with a wind deflector. I see the perspex is about £180 from the Porsche site. Questions are - is there an alternative, would I also need a fitting kit, should I get the mesh for the rollover hoops as well...do they make a noticeable difference.....??

IMHO yes, the deflector does make a difference and is worth getting.

Hi Gary

I bought both the Perspex Wind Deflector with case and the Mesh Inserts (which also make a difference) from that well known site for a fraction of the cost, both were in excellent condition. I did buy the fixing kit (3off location clips and Rivets) from the local Porsche dealership. Fitting the clips is relatively straight forward but you do need to carefully remove the Rollbar Padding, new fixings for these are provided in the kit. You will of course also need a Rivet Gun. Hope this helps.

Paul

Yes the wind deflector kit makes a huuuuge difference at speeds over 20mph. With it my hair is not blown around, without it, i can barely see where im going cos of the wind being sucked into the car from behind!

I got mine from an ebayer, they pop up from time to time.
Remember the 986 & 987 kits are different and cant be interchanged.

I think i paid around £80 for the mesh and the screen altogether.
