WIND MIRRORS !!!

Hi has anyone here taken there mirrors apart and put teardrop mirrors on because i can,t get the mirrors apart from the base it is attached to the mirror of the teardrop and i need to get it a part to get them resprayed thanks paul
 
I would seriously suggest just leaving them with the bases on to paint them, assuming they have RHD 968 bases on at the moment.

My teardrops are being a nightmare: First I had them painted with the bases on, then realised they were for a LHD car. I had a pair of RHD 911 bases in the garage so I got them painted and then struggled with my indie to put them together. After using them I realised that being LHD the passenger glass was flat rather than convex and didn't therefore have enough field of view. I got a convex glass from the OPC on Saturday and fitted it in the afternoon. When I finished I was putting the mirror body back to the right place and the sodding thing popped apart again [:mad:]. For now I only have a driver's side mirror until I can get back to my indie on Friday to get it sorted.

If you really want to take them apart you need to push the hex socket headed "bolt" you can see from the bottom of the base against a spring and turn it about 1/4 turn. That's relatively easy (especially if you don't care about the paint). Getting it back together again is reversal of that and it's a royal pain.
 
Thanks Fen only one is attach the people i brought them of built one up and left one apart also how do they attach to the car do i use the bolts from my wing mirrors
 
I'm trying to remember how the 944 ones work as the 911 ones might be different and it's ages since I fitted my 944 ones. On the 911 there is a screw which holds a hook on the end and basically you put the pins from the base through the 2 holes and the hook through the third then tighten the screw to make the hook grab the hole. That is the same as the original 911 mirrors so I imagine the 944 one is the same as the originals also.

If one is already apart then you can probably see how the base is held on - you should have the bolt thing with a spring round it. You push it up through the base into the top part and the 3 dogs at the top locate with depressions inside the top.
 
The base will have 2 locating tabs and an allen bolt which goes through the top of the base into a captive nut in the door. The teardrop mirrors fit all the existing mounts from the flag style mirrors

Yep, that sounds right. I remember looking at the hook on the 911 ones and thinking it was odd. The hook is instead of the captive nut.
 
I got some LHD 968 mirrors. I have now got the new bases painted and put back together with the mirrors, just waiting to get them put on the car.

Now afterall that I am starting to worry that the electrics might be different between a LHD and a RHD? The cables / connectors coming out of the mirror bases are different ie the one sticking out of the left hand mirror looks different to the one sticking out of the right hand mirror. Is the cabling "handed" as well? Will the fit ok? please say yes....
 
Yes, it will be fine, I think the only real difference is a loop on one side that isn't there on the other. LHD and RHD motors are the same as far as I know. The wire colours are totally different though, but that's to do with the year of manufacture rather than the side of the steering wheel.

What you will have is a passenger side glass that is flat giving a narrow angle of view and actual size reflection and a driver's side convex glass giving a wider angle of view and a smaller than true reflection. Personally I hate that combo and have replaced the glasses in my 964 ones to get them the correct way round for RHD.
