Window Channel Inside Door

Hi Guys

Following on from the recent topic about this I think I may be missing something. I have been trying to fix a rattle in there for ages!

I found that the window channel at the lock end of the door was completely loose. This was causing a rattle. I have subsequently got it fully secured at the bottom and the rattle is gone with the window shut. However it comes back with the window open.

Is there something that secures this channel at the top that I should be looking for? I'm sure Olly mentioned something about this the other day.

If so, how do you get to it?

Ah... I have a feeling you may have a problem...

I had to replace the door on my Turbo years ago... on the replacement supplied by a reputable breaker (and replaced with no hassle accordingly) the weld between the door channel and edge of the window frame had broken. If I'm interpreting your mail correctly, that may well be what has happened to your door.

Probably not a common problem, but... it is one that I would now look for...

Hmmm. So no screws or bolts at the top end.

My car had a door skin replaced many years ago, wonder if the problem arose then?

I should be able to pack it with something to cure the rattle. Time to get creative!

I did. And it was the other day. But my memory of the details of the problem may not be that helpful. However if you look at section 57 and page 4 of the Porsche manuals you'll see the screw that attaches at the 'top' of the window guide rail. It's not actually the top - it's at the bottom of the window frame, and in my case it had come loose.

However, from the sound of it, you have had a good look and not found the screw in question. In which case I don't know what to suggest - sorry. Are you sure it isn't simply missing?

I haven't really had a good look at the top. I assumed I had found the issue at the bottom of the rail which is now secure! Can you remember if it hides behind the anti tamper plate that bolts on?

Must have another look!

Can't remember, sorry. I do recall that it was very easy to see the top of the bolt, but very hard to get the tool lover. Mine had an external-hex head (standard bolt head), which was the worst possible design. An internal hex head would have been a million times easier, for reasons of clearance.

My early car has had door skin at some time in the dim and distant and I think a self tapper was put in at the very top under the door trim. This has worked loose over the years and no longer holds, so I replaced it with a locknut and bolt - make sure its not too long or you get a worse rattle with thw window down !

Took the door card off again today. The spot weld at the top was fine and so was the top of the runner. I found the window was knocking against the anti tamper plate thing causing the rattle. This was because the outer seal/trim piece wasn't seated properly, the one which runs along the top of the door skin. I took this off and re-seated it and it took up sufficient play to stop the glass hitting the plate.

Went for a spin with the window down and rattle gone![:D]

It really is quite a satisfying feeling eradicating a rattle from your old sports car! Onto the drivers seat next which has developed the tiniest of squeaks for no apparent reason!

Yes, eliminating rattles is hugely satisfying! It's surprising how smooth 944's are to drive when they are rattle free. (Or, to put it another way, it's amazing how much an annoying rattle can spoil an otherwise good car.)
