Window lowering sounds like loose stones

When I lower the drivers window on my 986, it sounds like some loose stones are rattling around inside the door - does this mean my regulator has fallen to pieces?
 
Could be the window regulator cable starting to fray. Mine started like this - lots of noise before the cable snapped. Unfortunately it means a new regulator is required. I got a good secondhand one - £120 - and fitted it myself.
 
I was afraid of that. Had a look at a guide to taking the door card off, and it looked nasty. And when it was done, the pictures didn't show any access to the regulator - looks like I might invest in a trip to the indy ....

I removed my door card yesterday to fix a rattle behind the side airbag cover. Once you know what you're doing it's really only a 10 minute job.

1. Lever the door handle cover off (make sure you pull it away from the door and not up or down)
2. Remove the 2 bolts (using Torx bits), and 1 screw (Phillips - hidden behind the door opener)
3. Unscrew the screw located inside the storage compartment slightly concealed at the top (Phillips).
4. Pull out the door light and undo from the bulb.
5. (For facelift cars) Lever (carefully) the silver airbag cover, and undo the allen bolt within.

Now you just pull the door cover off from the bottom towards you, until each clip has loosened.
Work your way around the door card until the left/right/bottom are now loose.
Then you push the whole door card up from the bottom/sides, as it is now only 'wedged' in place at the window sill.

Job done.
 
Richard - did'nt want to hear that! No wonder the breakers yard were so helpful! Based on recent OPC experiences, I was convinced this was going to be the usual second mortgage job.
As for the actual job, I also initially thought it looked like a bit of a nightmare - in fact it was very straight forward and probably only took 45 mins or so, start to finish. Once the door card is off, the regulator is held in with four small bolts - two top and two bottom. You disconnect the wiring to the motor and wangle the whole thing out of the aperture in the lower half of the door. The new one goes in the same way - mine came complete with window motor which made it slightly easier. Whatever you do, don't be tempted to strip the regulator - once the cable unwinds, its stuffed. The trickiest bit was working out how the door card is removed.
 
OK, against my better judgement but on everybody's advice here, I'm gonna try and take the door card off this weekend to see if the regulator is knackered. That way I'll know what to order ...
